I don't live downtown, I live in the burbs. So I deal with commuting and such.

Those prices are in line with apartment/condo living downtown for sure.
Its the taxes that kill me though.

and the fucking monopolies such as translink, BC Hydro, Fortis BC (natural gas) and BC Ferries are mismanaged and ridiculously expensive.
Rates go up steadily each year
Its cheaper for me to go to Vegas, than camping on Vancouver Island(with a car and trailer)

plus heavy income tax, property tax and utilities

Municipalities are even thinking of trying to charge MST for everyday items. Carbon tax adds 11 cents to every litre of gas.

shits wack

Aah yeah, I don't know much about Canada's taxing system, honestly I have no clue about it.  What's the average tax for a paycheck?  Like 1/5th of the check?  I've lost that much before.  More before too...

I would advise against Vegas though, it's economy isn't really going to ever resolve due to the opening of so many high quality Indian casinos across the country.  (Anyone from NV can admit the gaming industry took a huge hit and will no longer support the state).  Reno has huge tax breaks, apple's opening a facility, I think Google is looking into opening something up here too.

Canada is amazing. Did you know that we don't have any real problems up here? We have to take small problems and inflate them, otherwise there would be no front page on the paper. The latest problem: A senator illegally claimed 90k in expenses and repaid it cause he got caught. That's been the national headline for a month now. It seems that November's problem will be whether or not a mayor has smoked crack. There's always Quebec to talk about if we have a slow month...

Pot laws: There not really laws, they're more of a suggestion really.

Medical system: Sure you'll wait a couple hours to see a doctor, big deal.

Gun laws: We don't have guns. We have rifles. Irrelevant question.

Government: In Canada the government isn't the enemy, its a teammate. The economy is doing ok, again, no real problems.

Someone mentioned that Canadians should treat Americans like Americans treat Canadians. The answer is no, you guys have earned your respect.

Honestly, the changes in politics and stress from state to state is amazing, the east coast feels like it might as well be a different country from the west coast in both cultural and economical aspects, as well as political views.

I couldn't live in Vegas myself, after growing up in Reno, I've grown a disgust for casinos and a love for the Sierras, Tahoe and the skiing as well as backpacking 4x4ing, etc.  Vegas just seems like a giant suburb with a large strip in the 120F heat, and nothing but dirt and treeless mountains.  I'm sure I'm way off but... that's how it feels from a Northern nevadan perspective ;P

Yeah it's similar.  Definitely a LOT more than a 1/5 though, at least if you're making decent money.

Yeah, I think the worst thing that ever happens in Toronto is the occasional TTC strike, the news is incredibly boring, which is good. I imagine the train crash is going the be the one big thing in Canada for a year or two, right? I moved from Toronto a while ago but I imagine it hasn't changed much.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the multi-culturalism, it's what I miss most. In Toronto white people are the minority, and you have people from so many different countries and cultures that race is largely overlooked, it becomes irrelevant when defining one's identity. The US is bizarre, it's like there are 4 categories for race: white, black, hispanic, other. And race dominates US society in a way that Canadians don't understand (until they fucking live here).

Multiculturalism is a coin with two sides. Everything works until a group wants to take control.

Quebec is on the right track with this one. They've been criticized and called all the names in the book for it, but they treating the problem while its still small. Other provinces should follow cause eventually its going to be too late.

I must have missed something since I've left. Who's trying to take control? When I visit everything seems great still, but I don't follow anything that's going on up there anymore.

Nobody is trying to get control, but some immigrants are trying to bring their cultures to Canada. Some of these culture do not belong anywhere near Canada. If we allow one small thing, were gonna have to allow other things and the itll snowball. We gotta set the limits, make laws to back up these limits and never budge.

I dunno, as long as they don't tolerate muslims enforcing sharia law on each other I don't see too much of a problem, those cultures have been there for a while already (in Toronto at least) and no problems yet, as far as I know. Trust me, it's definitely better up there than in the US. When I was younger I had friends of all types of different backgrounds and it was utterly insignificant. It's hard to put the contrast into words, but the mentality in the US just sucks, everything is viewed through the context of race/culture, it's very divisive.

Could you give some examples of what you're talking about?  Sounds pretty racist to me.  I haven't noticed anything of the sort.

Quebec is notoriously racist so that is not helping your cause in my eyes.

Its stupid things really.

There was an incident where a man refused to get arrested by a women. They decided to send a guy instead of saying fuck off, I'm a cop, your under arrest.

There was an issue at La Ronde in Montreal. The park stopped allowing people to bring outside food on the premise, but they made an exception for the jews and muslims because they had to eat Halal food which none of the restaurants offered.

Its small things like that.
