I think this species was just ID'd yesterday by someone, they look like Tricholoma fracticum.

Hey, that was me! I actually just picked a few more today. My Russian friend says you can soak out the bitterness but I can't find a single source saying they can be eaten. I will try a wedge and then a whole mushroom and report back .

Sweet ! They grew out and it looks like somebody picked them or something. But there are a lot of then around, if they're good let me know ! I've found some shaggy manes growing near me though and I think some lyophyllum decastes, still on the look out for wild fungus in so cal !

I parboiled the heck out of these and it seems most the bitterness came out. Delightful chewy and kinda rubbery in a crunchy sort of way. Comparable to jellyfish in texture but much thicker. Maybe somewhat comparable to nameko in texture as well but again, much larger/thicker. A hint of a hearty earthy flavor. I only ate the smallest wedge. I'll try a little more tomorrow and report back.
I have a bunch of older ones I may give a try as well.
BTW I saw these growing with suillus granulatus which are choice edibles (or at least edible) so keep an eye out!

I ate maybe another 2 small caps. I'm feeling very minor gastrointestinal discomfort. Could just be in my head but these mushrooms are too flavorless to be worth it. On the other hand, they have really unique texture and would be an amazing addition to any soup...
I'm going to try and pickle the rest that I have just to see how they come out.
anyhow, get to try Suillus Granulatus for the first time tonight. Pretty excited .
