Practicing religion

Most people today don't practice religion and associate religion only with negative things such as prejudice, bigotry, ignorance, sexism, homophobia and outdated world views.
Certainly most people dont enjoy or benefit enough from sitting on a church pews on Sundays to bother doing it any more.
However there is another kind of religion. For an example we can look at practicing a Hindu mystical tradition.
One might set up an altar in one's home, place a candle there and perhaps incense and an incense burner.
One may or may not place a painting or statue of Ganesh, Krishna , Shiva or some other Hindu Diety.
Then one sits lotus position before the altar and practices one of two kinds of meditation.
1. Silent meditation such as pranayama or following the breath (focusing exclusively on inhaling and exhaling).
2. Chanting a Mantra , usually 108 times while counting repitions on a mala (a rope of beads).
The essential components of Mystical Hindu practice are asana (body posture), mudra (hand position), mantra (sound), mandala (sacred image) and pranayama (mindful breathing).
If you can get over the initial distrust or disdain for the idea of religion , and actually try these practices , you almost immediately realize how powerful these practices are for inducing desirable states of consciousness such as peace, relaxation, bliss, contentment, awareness, awakening etc.
These are technologies of consciousness developed through testing and experimentation over thousands of years. They really work and are well worth doing.
If you do not like the idea of worshiping a Hindu God (Bhakti Yoga) you can simply place flowers or a bamboo on your altar and chant the mantra OM 108 times or practice breathing meditation.
In any case, I highly recommend practicing this kind of religion.
I personally find it to be the most important component of daily life, along with exercise.
If I stop doing it, I feel shitty. If I do it regularly, I feel great.
