Whiplash`s first grow in words and images

Hello Everyone.
I have decided to make myself a post that I can use for "documenting" this project. I thought it would be good to keep it all together and also use the post to ask questions and post updates.
Its been a long standing dream to grow some mushrooms. For various reasons I put that on the back burner and now almost 12 years later the wheels have turned.
loong story short I ordered some spore prints a while back. 1 x Malaber(got this one for free with order!!) 1 x Huatlua 1 x PES Amazonian 1 x PES Hawaian 1 x Treasure coast
It cost me more to ship than the actual spores. Thats why I ordered a few prints.
Lots of reading..LOTS of reading and the next thing I knew I had 2x5ml syringes from each print.
25/9/13 inoculated 24 BRF jars a few days later I found them looking like this!! Was very chuffed:)

Out of the 24 jars I did only one had to be euthanised due to a weird green patch.
Sad sight but its for a good cause

I think 23 out of 24 jars for my first time is not bad at all.
Fast forward to 14/10/13 I dunked and rolled my first 7 cakes, after they consolidated for 8 days. and 24 hours later ...............

I have been staring these cakes down since that day. hahaha. Here they are 3 days after entering the SGFC. They have started getting white bits all over the edges and walls of the cake

Up until now I have been very strict with following the tek. But I decided its safe to sacrifice 3 jars to science. And broaden my understanding same time. (please dont take the next bit too serious I know i made huge mistakes but i prefer to see what goes wrong, and compare results for myself)
Experiment 1 - I refilled and injected the 7 jars I birthed. But this time inoculated with 0.5ml per cake. And i shot twice down each hole, in a upside down "V" shape. So there are 8 little blobs of mycelium growing now instead of 4. A few days later I have growth on all the jars

Experiment 2 - I crumbled 2 cakes together into a container and layered moist sterile vermiculite on top to see if a flat cake will give more than 2 normal cakes from same syringe. All of this happened inside a glovebox.

First I crumbled the cake in a ziplock

Then I transferred it to the container

Its been 3 days now and no contams and mycelium is joining up. Im stoked!!
Experiment 3 - I took a syringe with sterile water and injected it into a jar i was about to birth for Experiment 4. I injected 12mls and after swirling it about for a few minutes drew out 6ml of "mycelium water". I let it sit for a few hours while i let some verm cool off. I could see the tiniest bits of white fluff floating in the syringe.
On 19/10 I shared the 6ml between 3 jars. And today, 3 days later I found little white bits in all 3 jars. I actually didnt think it would work. But here you go. Its very small and the pic hides it but right next to the 5, at the top bit you can see the fluff:)

Experiment 4 - after doing the mycelium water experiment I birthed that cake and crumbled it into twice the amount of BRF mix inside a ziplock.
I layered it with moist verm and closed the lid(with holes for Gas exchange). Here is the container 19/10

Here is the container 21/10

So far there is no green or anything that looks odd and its colonizing FAST. This experiment I was sort of expecting to fail. But I was quite anal with hygiene and so far I think I am actually OK with the tray. Looking at the speed that the spawned BRF is colonizing the new BRF vs how slow the 2 x crumbled cakes seem to be joining back up I defnitly think that experiment 3 is beating experiment 2 hands down.
Ok back to business,
21/10/13 I found this!!!

Please tell me they are pins!! I have been leaving some jars to consolidate for longer, but when i saw this i birthed them. I ended up birthing 9 cakes and they are currently under water. To go into FC tomo.
Some of them I got the verm layer wet(left foil on after PC) and found the mycelium had grown right through.

I enjoyed looking at the mycelium for quite some time. Its like a silent gentle killer. So delicate...hahaha..
In the meanwhile I have allready refilled the jars that were birthed. They are cooling and will be knocked up tomorow. Ill be using 5ml between 9 Jars again.
I will update this as I go along. I hope you enjoy sharing this great learning journey with me!
For now Peace and Love
UPDATE 27/10/13
Morning fellow shroomers!
What great days I have been having.
Since my last post I have dunked and rolled more cakes and they are now in the SGFC.

@Bignacho : Yes! They were indeed pins! And 2 of my treasure coast cakes also made pins and are now fruiting away. WOW I am amazed at how quick they grow.
Here is a pic of one cake from 24 hours ago.

Here is the same cake this morning.

I found a mushroom with what looks like mycelium growing on the cap. From my searches it seems like it could be from not fanning enough/not enough FAE? It also has some around the base. Its just this one mushroom. Should I leave it? Is that mycelium? I have been fanning 3-4 times a day. yesterday was a very hot day and I was out most of the day so could only do a mist and fan at 7am and then again 11pm.

A little bit of not so good news. I innocluated 4 jars a few days ago with one of my syringes. It had a dark cloudyness inside. Here is a screen grab from a little vid I made while innoculating them. YOu can clearely see the dark cloud.
I thought it was mushroom spores that were clumped or germinating or something. Turns out it was a bad syringe. Every injection point on every jar went black and green in about 4 days.
Those jars were boiled and the contents disposed off properly.
Any advice on that mushroom with the odd growth on the cap will be hugely appreciated.
Here is another shot showing my current favourite cake:)

This forum is awesome and I would never have gotten this far without this community and all the info contained within it!
Thanks in advance for any help WL
UPDATE 28/10/13
My favourite cake (posted above) 24 hours later!

By the end of the day about 75% had veils either partially or fully torn so its all been harvested now.

..and placed in my drying box. Thats two cakes first flush there.

oh and yesterday morning the last of the consolidated jars, and my 2 flat cakes, got placed in SGFC. Full house

Success!!! All the jars from the above experiment have colonized 100%
 This hobby rocks!!
Here are a few shots of some cakes i have harvested.

And the last few cakes I put in the SGFC are now beginning to show the signs of fruits

Happy dayz WL
ps.. Fruit straight off the cake taste grrrrrreat!
UPDATE 2/11/13
The exploding amazonian!
This shot was taken yesterday at 12:30pm when I misted. Notice the crack on top of the biggest mushroom in the pic?

Here is the same mushroom 5.5 hours later at 6:00pm.

It looks like it expanded quicker than the skin could stretch and it kind of exploded?? What do you guys think happened there?
The exploding amazonian on the cake at harvest time
Something I think is worth noting. I consolidated some cakes longer than 7 days to see if I notice any differences.
I had 4 treasure coast jars (They were the fastest colonizers) 2 of the jars i birthed 7 days after 100% consolidation and the other two 14 days after 100%. The jars that had 7 days sat in the SGFC for 10-12 days to show pins.
The cakes that had 14 days to consolidate took 6-7 days in the SGFC to show the same growth. BUT they are growing WAY WAY more pins. Its literaly multiple times more. As you can from the following pics.
Here is a 7 day consolidated cake

These two shots are of a 14 day consolidated TC cake. This guy has by far the most pins so far. The pics dont quite capture it. Its literally crusted all around!
Another 14 day consolidated cake with way more growing than the 7 day cake.
This is the first flush of a 7 day consolidated Treasure coast. Soon i will have a comparative shot of a 14 day consolidated cake.
Thats it for today Peace out WL
UPDATE 5-11-2013
Not much to say but thought Id update anyhow.

Here is a comparison shot of one of the cakes that consolidated for an extra week.
It had a visibly smaller first flush. I guesse working with multi spore any comparison is kind of pointless. But Im still keen to compare second flushes for kicks.
Below the same cake at harvest time

Below is 2 shots of the other TC cake with extra week consolidated. This one gave a slightly better flush than the one above. P

Thats all folks.
I leave you with a shot of a hawaian cluster coming to age

Peace out! WL
