Program takes back a ton of drugs — literally
    #19066403 - 10/31/13 09:45 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

More than a ton of drugs was collected Saturday during the Take-Back program, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, Olmsted County Sheriff's Office and the Rochester Police Department.

A total of 2,017 pounds of drugs came in, an increase of about 100 pounds over April's effort.

It was the seventh opportunity in three years for area residents to get rid of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Rochester does not have a permanent drug drop-off site, though Mower and Dodge counties offer sites in Austin and Mantorville, respectively.

Officials at Olmsted County consider the program a success, and say their support will continue. That includes installing a permanent collection box in the near future. There's no word where the box will be located.

In its six previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners nationwide took in more than 2.8 million pounds — more than 1,400 tons — of pills.

The event was held in cooperation with Mayo Clinic; 1,150 cars went through the drop-off area on the west side of the Gonda Building to dispose of the drugs.
