quick questions
    #1906406 - 09/11/03 06:02 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

1. i do not have a pressure cooker and vermiculite has been impossible to find in my area- yes i have checked all likely sources and even some unlikely ones. what is a possible substrate mixture? is there ANYTHING that can be used in place of vermiculite? i read in the faq that perlite is not ideal however i have seen cakes pin with perlite. was this just a fluke or are the results there but just not as good? anyhow, suggestions are much appreciated.

2. which of the shroomery sponsors is a good spore source?

3. again, i read some of the material contained in the different articles but which terrarium setup do some of you users prefer?

Verm outperforms just about everything for pf cakes. I wouldn't recommend substituting it with something else. Actually verm is pretty important for any type of cubensis cultivation. Even if you do grains instead of brf/verm, you have to case them cause grains don't do well as cakes, and just about every good casing tek uses verm. So I'd just keep looking. If you can't find it locally, you could always order it online.

Kussh, was that a typo? Did you mean to say, "I would NOT suggest replacing verm?" Just checking.

According to The Polymer Technique , Polymer Crystals can be used in the same way as vermiculite. However, I have never tried this tech, and I have heard worries expressed over the toxicity of polymer crystals and the potentiel for them to become imbedded in ingested mushroom material. I would heavily recommend making every effort to get vermiculite, but if it truly is impossible, perhaps you should try the tek.

Once, a load of vermiculite got accidentaly contaminated with abestos, and there is still paranoia among some vendors that it might happen again.

just looked at the poor mans pod, 3 questions-

1. can perlite be used instead of whatever the heck else is in there? there are no hydro stores within 100 miles of me.

2. is the lid just taken off when water needs to be added? how much water? frequency?

3. is that an aquarium light on top? i assume the tupperware container needs to be cut for this to fit? how often does the light need to be on?
