Any former heavy drug users that are living a completely sober life now?
    #19061494 - 10/31/13 01:59 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

(completely sober includes not using marijuana & alcohol as well)

If so I want to hear about a few things from you.

1. How did you do it?

2. How do you continue to do it?

3. Has you're life improved since becoming sober? If so, how much has it improved?

4. How long did you use for and how often/what substances did you use?

5. Why did you do it?

6. Any tips for someone trying to quit using?

I'm asking this mainly because I'm thinking about/trying to do this and I'm afraid that my life will lose what little joy it has.

My life has revolved around using/abusing substances for years and I'm ready for a change.

I started drinking kava in January, but before that it was only tobacco and caffeine for over 8 years. I did it because I had time in CYA over my head and I kept fucking up on probation. I figured I get sober for my 3 years of probation.
It was only possible for me through a 12 step program (AA). I still go to a meeting 1 or 2 times a month.
I went from homeless to married making 60k a year in just 4yrs sobriety.
The program literally taught me how to live, really amazing stuff if you can maintain an open mind.
Smoked weed 12 to 14 then meth fucked me up 14 to 18, before I got sent to rehab.
Totally worth it, and my only suggestion is go to a AA or NA meeting and just try it out, start with a small goal, maybe a couple months and just go from there.

I dont know what you consider "heavy" but there was a time where I was doing 8-10 grams of 99.7% pure lab grade MXE every 5-7 days alongside a few G's of K when I could get it.
I was pretty batshit for a while, that was a looong drug binge.

Basically had no choice on quitting. Just kinda lost connections to the drug.

I don't agree with AA/NA They say that you are powerlees and you have to surrender to god and shit. Frankly I just don't believe that in the slightest.

The decision to keep using or to get sober is my decision and I have to make it. I have power over my mind/body, not some higher power, it's all on me.

I take credit for using the drugs, so if I decide to get clean I'm damn sure not giving that credit to something else.

1. How did you do it?

Well first I had to come to a place where it was clear I was gonna end up dead if I kept going the way I was going and not only that but really want to quit have no reservations on using. I got arrested multiple times last year and detoxed from heroin in jail which is a shitty experience. I opted into a drug court type program and eventually went to inpatient treatment. I needed time and space away somewhere to clear my mind and fully overcome the WD from heroin, I could always get through the acute stage it was the after stages that would get me to go back. the lack of sleep and the obsession to use would always fucking get me. I have no control over myself once I put that first drug into my body my brain screams MORE MORE MORE untill I feed the beast and continue in the fucked up cycle that addiction is.

2. How do you continue to do it?
I am very involved in AA I have service commitments I chair meetings secretary meetings etc

3. Has you're life improved since becoming sober? If so, how much has it improved?
My life is 1000% better sober on my worst day then it was on my best day of using.

I just hit 9 months on the 28th, I work full time and after only being there for two months I received a promotion and a 2.50 cent raise because I am there everyday I work hard and I dont have the issues that someone who is getting loaded all the time has.

I got my license for the first time in my life, I was able to get a car that I absolutely love. Fuck I even have insurance. I am accountable today when I say I am gonna do something I do it.

My family trusts me again. My brother cash to pay his portion of the bills and knows that I am actually gonna go pay them and not spend it on heroin, It feels so fucking good for my family to actually want to see me, My mom smiles when she sees me and she is in a nursing home battling cancer right now and I can be there to help her I dont have to have heroin to function its absolutely amazing.

4. How long did you use for and how often/what substances did you use?
I used opiates off and on for about 8 years but was a poly drug abuser starting with weed in highschool if I like something I take it to extremes

Just examples I was smoking at least a 1/4 of weed a day (with friends) when I was using heroin I had to have at a minimum 200mgs to not be sick for 12 hours but there were plenty of days where I would do a half ball which is around 1500 mgs

When I was drinking I had to have a fifth at least or I wasnt satisfied either that or about 4 or 5 cans of 4loko

5. Why did you do it?
IDK I am sure there are alot of underlieing causes my dads death didnt help I really went off the deep end after that but to be honest I like to fucking party
6. Any tips for someone trying to quit using?
Yeah man get involved in some sort of program AA NA CA whatever get rid of all your druggy friends and just remember where ya came from and how shitty the life style is. Alot of people get hung up on the whole god thing in 12 step programs, I tried the christian thing it didnt vibe with me. It says we came to beleive in a god OF OUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. which means it can be whatever the fuck you want it to be, I beleive that I put good into life I get good outta life simple as that I wake up in the morning and try to make the day the best I can.  I am faaaarrrr from perfect but ya know what I make a effort and try the best I can.

I'm asking this mainly because I'm thinking about/trying to do this and I'm afraid that my life will lose what little joy it has.

I have tons of fucking fun I promise you, you get with the right crowd and sobriety will not be boring bro mark my words, I never thought I could have any fun sober but I sure fucking do man

If you ever wanna talk shoot me a message or something ill give you my phone number any questions feel free to ask

I agree most fellowships have turned it into a religion, but that was not the original intent of the founders, and some atheist have problems with the program because it is indeed a spiritual program, but I have met some of the most spiritual, hippie, loving people in the program that began as atheist and are now agnostics. They are not all the stupid bible thumping idiots that make up the majority. You may not like it but it works. Oh and droll and dark it is not, at least that is not my experience, I have had a lot of fun with the people I have met.

Yeah I understand that it's a god of you're choosing, but I don't believe there is any power higher than the human mind, especially not any higher power that is concerned with the inner-workings of my everyday life.

Butt thanks for your answers and support, I appreciate it man.

I would say I'm like this right now too, but I ocassionally find myself slipping, and I know one of these days it's going to get bad, and I just don't want that to happen.

better safe than sorry, I'm tired of gambling.

the best things is to keep busy. if you find a good job, where you need to be well rested and in good form for work, that in itself is almost enough to keep you off of a majority of drugs, because you want be able to recover in time for work to maintain any serious habbits

Yeah last time I worked was actually the time when I did the most drugs.

Opiates & amphetamines to make it through the work day, more opiates, marijuana, & alcohol afer work to wind down, then whatever I could get my hands on on days I didn't work.

Having a steady source of money coming in is when I really start to fuck up, ot's kind of scary.

I think one of the main reasons I'm not a full blown addict yet is because I don't currently have a steady income.

I use to have a heavy addiction when I was in my early 20s . Drink ,weed(wake n bake), Lsd ,mdma, speed, crack, coke or what ever I could get my hands on at the time . I tried a few times to quit but still kept the same circle of friends who used the same drugs and failed every time. When I was 24 I decided I need to quit hard drugs and make something of my life .

I left my family and friends and moved to the UK for a clean break . Found a job and kept clean other than drink for 3 years , not a heavy drinker more of a sociable thing . Meet my partner who I have been with for 9 years and had a son 5 years ago . I started smoking weed on occasions but it is the 1 drug I still enjoy to help me relax .I use mushrooms maybe 2-3 times a year just to keep things interesting .

The hardest party of quieting any drugs is the thing that are associated with it like the smell of good weed ,the friends you keep , the places you hang out on drugs and so on . If you really want to quit you have to be willing to leave all that behind and move on IMO . AA/NA might not be for everyone but they do work , I'm not religious and neither were the NA meetings I went to . Must just be a US thing but it's a good place to share and hear what other addicts are going throw . Good luck

I was never a heavy drug user but I experimented sometimes with stuff I shouldn't have and kept experimenting long afterwords

Now it's kind of my job to stay sober most of the time, it's pretty easy though when you have no job. Although I'm not really a stable person, little things piss me off so bad and I can't restrain myself (when I'm alone)

Yeah you don't have to get deep in the whole 12 step thing, you can just go to talk/listen. I've been to a few with my dad and they weren't to bad, I just don't like the 12 step program.

And I wish I could leave, but I have $0.30 in my bank and I have no where to go, plus I'm on probation.

I do plan on leaving in the spring though, even if I have to go live in the woods.

1. How did you do it?

I simply stopped hanging out with all the people that I used to smoke/drink with, and I stopped buying hard drugs, I just didn't think about it.

2. How do you continue to do it?

I think the internet replaced my addictions, but basically I just stay busy online, the computer is very entertaining.

3. Has you're life improved since becoming sober? If so, how much has it improved?

To an extent it has improved, but i'm definitely not as care free as I once was. But I am a lot more mature and in touch with reality. I was 18 when I quit, I'm almost 20 now.

4. How long did you use for and how often/what substances did you use?

Meth, Weed, Alcohol, 2 1/2 years. Used all very often.

5. Why did you do it?

Boredom, I live in a shitty little town where there is nothing to do. I am prone to addiction as well so that's why I did it for so long.

6. Any tips for someone trying to quit using?

Just stay positive, reach out to friends or try and meet some new friends/ good company that will help you stay positive, I didn't have that but it would have helped. Believe in yourself. Don't give in to your withdrawl temptations. Not even once a week.

AA and NA does work for people who are serious about it.

for people to come on here and shit on a program which is continuing to dominate in the area of helping recovering drug addicts is beyond me.

im not regarding the twelvestep program, i dont personally follow it, but theres nothing wrong for people who do.

Im regarding NA and AA, where people sit down and share experiences about there problems, a special time to release some negative energy and gain some positive perspective.

i watched a movie about the creation of AA, and its one of the best movies i have seen. i have multiple things in life going on at once and i rely on softer drugs but i still have a terrible time quitting, so i wreckon anyone of any drug addiction caliber should feel at home when goin to these meetings. your doin a drug that is effecting your responsibilities in a negative way, and your relationships. thats all there is too it. either face it, or keep justifying your drug usage.

i used to think i could control my drug usage, that goes for everyone whose ever done drugs.. so your sitting here saying all i need is me, well thats true to an extent, until the 1st step of 22 steps ( i think, give or take a couple steps) of a relapse is put in motion, at this point you have lost control, its a fact and has been proven over years of research, you will relapse unless you have some type of intervention by someone.  i wish i had the source/video for the research/studies ive seen regarding addiction and relapses. its crazy how they have it down to the point on what happens, and its universal.

I don' really have a problem with AA, if it works for you then good, I'm glad.

I'm just not willing to think that I'm powerless because I'm not, nor will I ever be.

Some people need structure in their lives, whether it be the military, 12 step groups, or a relationship, or religion.  It helps people live better more productive lives and while you and me might think its bullshit it helps them.  NA/AA isn't there to make money, they genuinely do want to help you get clean.  Its a cult, but at least no one is at the top trying to get rich.

    #19065066 - 10/31/13 06:18 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I went from spending literally everyday getting shit faced to nothing. haven't had even a beer or a single hit in over 2 months now. I just did it with determination, I want a job so I can't smoke weed and I don't like who I am when I'm drinking.. giving up the weed was easier than the alcohol, I am/was a full blown alcoholic. Everyday sober makes it easier to stay sober.. The first few days are harder and seem to take longer than the next couple of months.

to answer each one specifically..

1. How did you do it?

I just stopped, wasn't easy though, it took a lot of determination.

2. How do you continue to do it?
Each day I spend sober, the next is a little easier to get through, I'm to the point now where I don't even think about "what I'm missing" every day, much less every hour like it was the first few days.

3. Has you're life improved since becoming sober? If so, how much has it improved?
Well I spent all day, every day shit faced and couldn't hardly form a coherent thought. I like to be able to think, I wasn't able to when I was always fucked up. I'm not making an ass of myself and regretting it the next day now either, so that's definitely a plus.

4. How long did you use for and how often/what substances did you use?
I've been a full blown alcoholic for right around 10 years now. I'd been smoking all day every day for the past year and a half. I'll always be a pot head at heart and if it weren't for wanting a job that hair tests, I'd still be smoking. Those are the two things I use the most regularly, I love Xanax as well, but it's harder to come by for me so it was kind of a rare 'treat'. I've been smoking weed since 13 though.. Over the past 15 years I've spent at least 5 of them smoking every day. The rest was sporadically, sometimes I'd have a connection, sometimes I wouldn't.

5. Why did you do it?
Quit weed to get a job, quit alcohol because I'm a straight ass. I'm a violent drunk and I was tired of losing my shit and then waking up the next day regretting the entire night (if I'm lucky enough to even remember it). You can only say "never again" so many times before you realize you just have to quit drinking all together for it to be true.

6. Any tips for someone trying to quit using?
Need self control, that's for sure. I fully believe everyone holds the self control to say no, I'm extremely impulsive and have the least amount of self control out of anyone I know yet I managed to do it. Just have to be determined to quit. yeah it's going to suck at first, and you will probably have to deal with withdrawal of some type, but I promise it gets easier. Just tell yourself no, no matter what, for 2 weeks and I'm sure you'll start to see how it gets easier.

2 months is good, but 2 months isn't a time to give advice to anyone.  I've stayed sober completely for like 90 days every time I was ever able to quit anything.  It gets a lot harder when as your life gets harder.

My life's plenty hard at the moment (a lot harder than when I quit) and I haven't really been tempted to go back.

Not the only time I've quit, either. I quit when I was on probation because it just wasn't worth the jail time. The only real difference this time is I made the choice to quit on my own, rather than be told I have to quit (I still made the choice then, I coulda kept using and just hoped I got away with it).

5 Days sober from marijuana.

over 2 weeks clean from everything else.

I had a pretty bad benzo addiction, taking 30mg of xanax a day, smoking meth most days and eating copious amounts of opiates. I've been through every withdrawal there is except coke withdrawal.

I was sober for about 6 months, and then only used RC's like MXE and M1 I was able to keep it like that for a while to. I then relapsed with etizolam twice, also took meth twice, and shot some dilauded and m1 on a few occasions

I've been sober now for I think a week or two, idk once you get that long break in it made it easier for me to control my use.

Also I didn't smoke weed until about 2 months ago, I'll take 2-3 hits a month and it doesn't show up on drug tests even days after smoking

Well I'm clean in my eyes at least. I've been off everything that ruins my life for a little over 2 months.

I take kratom, but for pain because I have a lot of issues with my back. I can't use opiates responsibly so this is my only alternative.

I went to a program for substance abuse, after that I enrolled in another program for ptsd/substance abuse.

I was just sick of running away from all my problems and I felt absolutely miserable. I'm almost always happy now.

Really happy to hear that man  Goodluck staying off the opies, you seem like your in the right mindset to get over that shit.

Have you ever gone through a period of sobriety before? IMO after about 3-4 months life gets SO much better and you really stop thinking about drugs for the most part

Well, I honestly have had hardly any cravings at all. Like two or three times I would tell myself that I could do that and it will be alright. But then I have to take a step back and remind myself that I can't handle it.

I've been sober for 6-7months if not more a few times. However even though I was saying I wanted to quit, I didn't have the willpower sometimes and I was scared of killing myself after an overdose or two. So this is the first time I voluntarily went to treatment (and finished that is). The other times I never finished the progras.

Yeah, honestly for me it wasn't so much the cravings, those went away surprisingly fast. But when i would hangout with old friends that used drugs I just couldn't resist. Never spiraled out of control but I'd relapes and go on a mini day or weekend binge.

Plus the boredom of having no license or a job is such a pain in the ass to deal with while sober, kratom is a fucking life saver for sure
