Possible Psilocybe ID Request (British Columbia)
    #19061219 - 10/31/13 12:04 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat: Wood - Found in deciduous woods, growing straight from a fallen rotting tree.

Gills: Difficult to tell. I haven't picked a fully mature specimen (just rained today for the first time in a while, I'm going to pick a couple tomorrow for another print, testing the bruising and looking at gill colour), however on my immature specimen the gills appeared to be a light tan colour, with darker colour in between the gills.

Stem: Whitish, fibrous with no annulus on any specimen. Roughly ~2-4mm diameter, usually 3-6cm long.

Cap: From caramel at the point fading closer to white at the edges. At maturity, specimens are demonstrating a broad umbo. 2-4cm across.

Spore print color: A very dark brown, bordering on purplish-black.

Bruising: On my immature sample, no bruising was noticed, however it could easily have been missed. I'm going to test this out on a mature sample tomorrow.

Location: Temperate rainforest near Vanouver, BC. Primarily a coniferous forest, with a decent number of deciduous trees as well. Growing at the base of a decomposing stump of unknown type.

As they are beginning to grow.

All specimens are fruiting, at this point a medium sized one (1.5-1cm cap) was taken for a spore print.

Specimen taken for spore print.

Closer to maturity, photos taken 4 or 5 days ago.

Taken tonight. Starting to demonstrate a broad umbo.

Thanks.

That sure looks like them. I'm going to go harvest one or two mature ones to do a spore print on and get a better photo of the gills/check for bruising just to be sure.

Does anyone know much about what the Marginatum's spore print will look like?

Its purple, like all Hypholoma species.
I agree with H. marginatum.

Being a Hypholoma, I expect purple brown.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Just got back from a midnight picking, chose the biggest one and an average one. The average was smaller than I recalled (1.5cm). The bigger wan was about 3cm (didn't measure that one, just took photos and put it in for a spore print).

Picked specimens and gill closeup: http://imgur.com/a/GSnnI

I've set aside the cap pictured for a spore print.

For anyone who's interested, here's an album of the mushrooms I've found withing roughly 100m of these ones: http://imgur.com/a/7fRkS

I work full time so midnight bowls and a mush hunt are a great way to relax when I don't have commitments.

Also my 400 lumen bike light picks up mushroom stalks like nothing else.
