IDing cow dung shrooms
    #19059790 - 10/30/13 08:12 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hello all, I'm new to this site, and have an important question involving identifying cow dung mushrooms. I live in Oklahoma, and my friend recently picked a couple shrooms off some older dung piles on his farm. After a couple hours of browsing this site, we couldn't tell if they were psilocybin containing shrooms. Unfortunately I can't upload a pic from mobile (if I can I don't know how haha) They were about 7-10 CM tall, mostly white, with yellowish brownish color at the tip of the cap, or head or whatever it's called. The cap is also pretty small, as doesn't open that much around the edge. It's kind of shaped like a bullet, but a little less narrow. Inside the cap, (spores I think? Haha I'm extremely shroom ignorant of you couldn't tell) it is black. After being put in a ziploc bag, It kind of got crushed, and is much blacker than it was an hour ago, and mushier. Can anyone also identify if it could possibly be poisonous as well? Thanks to everyone! (this might all sound dumb as fuck, but my friend is optimistic and I'm not touching these until I know for sure what they are)

Sounds like you are describing Panaeolus antillarum, but without photos...

Also, try to avoid putting your finds in plastic bags, they will degrade very rapidly.

black gills, and it got all black after just a few hours in a bag?

It sounds like you might have a coprinoid muhsroom.

Pictures would be vastly helpful, but look here and google for Panaeolus and consider the various species and let us know if either of those seem similar.

Thanks! Are those pshycoactive? Poisonous? Even dangerous to eat? I haven't got the amazing chance to do shrooms yet, only LSD a handful of times, DXM, and Salvia, so I'm practically brainless when it comes to shrooms, haha

They are inedible.  Also for future hunting, do not keep mushrooms in a plactic bag.  They will promptly rot.

Tell them not to drink ANY alcohol for a week.  Otherwise, they will suffer much discomfort.  Research coprine.

Alright! Thanks everyone who helped me out. I hope to find some legit shrooms in cow dung in the future, but living in OK and not along the gulf, it's unlikely. Guess I'll stick to CID till shroomies come round my way Hahahaha

I almost mistaken Coprinellus micaceus for magic mushrooms before too. They grow in huge clusters and if found before they turn black I heard can be a good edible but I havent ever tried them. I tried shaggy manes and they are great! Same deal catch em before they start to turn to ink

We see this happen with a lot of new hunters, before they learn how to pay attention to details, and start learning which details are significant and when. I bet if you never payed attention to mammals and almost every animal you saw was a reptile, wolves and foxes would look very much alike.

meganthratalica: Did you say which area you are in? Depending on georgaphical area, and which species occur there, dung and pastures might not be the appropriate place to seek psilocybian muhsrooms.

Central OK. It's been 70's the past few weeks and we just had a good rain today. And yes, the shrooms were in clusters on cow parties, mostly old ones. And my friend who did shrooms before said they looked very alike to the ones he had.

I hear that alot. That they look like ones people had before. Also Coprinellus usually grows from wood. Mainly dead wood. So cow patties seems a bit off not to doubt u. I bet if you put a bunch of unknowns in a bag and took them to a party most peeps wouldnt have a clue what they really are and someone would want to eat them. Its strange u will learn most folks are mushroom illiterate. I had some non actives in a bag once and a friend wanted to eat them badly even tho i told him i didnt know what they were and that they could possibly kill him! He said I dont care whats the worst that could happen? Sheesh.

You won't have common psilocybian muhsrooms from dung in that area.

If you traveled down towards the gulf you would have Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens, but I don't think either are very common until you actually hit southern coastal Texas.

Your area should certainly have Panaeolus cinctulus, but you're far more likely to find it on large manure heaps, hay stacks which have been in the weather long enough to be growing all kinds of fungi, or lush lawns.

You can also find Gymnopilus on downed tree logs in forest areas, though I don't particularly know which psychoactive species occur there.

My friend made 140 off a half O 10 minutes after harvesting them (when we thought they were actives) and didn't even mean to screw this dude over. Im tellin ya, not a lot of people around here know shrooms when they see them Hahahahaha. After we've found out they were fake we called the dude back and explained it (he's a good friend) haha but yeah, serious money could be made off worthless ink caps even though I'm probably just throwng all these away.

That's super shady. It's very nice to come forward to the guy right away but selling unidentified mushrooms to anybody, or misrepresenting the exact identity of wild muhsrooms to anybody are not the behavior of upstanding people. The later would put somebody right of the list of those I would be happy to help out, and the former would land my boot ankle deep in an ass.

You two definitely did the right thing.
