Self-healing lids for Pf Tek
    #19059342 - 10/30/13 07:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi,
I have searched the forum and found some threads on the subject, however I did not get a definitive answer to my question.

I made lids with 5 x 5/16" holes, 4 on the sides covered with silicon as inoculation ports and one in the middle recovered with cellulose filter (http://www.shroomsupply.com/air-filtration/cellulose-filter-disc-70-mm), sealed on the sides with silicon.

My 2 questions ARE :
1. I know it is not NECESSARY, but I was wondering if it would HURT anything to have both the vermiculite layer AND a self healing lid for the PF Tek?

2. Being a perfectionnist, I want to have the best setup for optimal GE (lowest colonization time + good balance of humidity) and was wondering if having a 5/16" hole recovered with the filter described above was better, equal or worse than having 4 uncovered nail-size holes.

i believe that you have a redundant system going on there...
i believe the pf-tek is already the greatest way to consolidate a cake.
the mycelium will actually generate heat and expose moisture inside of the jar, then it escapes in the opening of the holes.

its only quite a bit of people going to say not to fuck with the pf-tek for cakes....

As I said, I understand a self healing lid is not necessary for the PF tek but I will be storing them in a room that is really dirty for colonization time (it's the only place with the right temp in the appartment, and it can't be cleaned because it's a storage) and want to take extra precautions.

I am just wondering if a single 5/16" hole covered with thick cellulose filter is detrimental to GE vs the four regular uncovered "penny nail" holes.

Your layer of dry vermiculite acts as a filter...

If you want to do it go for it.

I have used 1/4 and 1/2 pint PP containers, the ones with the 5 inside the recycle code, for the PF tek. I just put 1 SHIP and a polyfil GE port. You could do it many different ways with the lid but it works great. I skip the dry verm barrier with these and do the dunk and roll as normal. I only ever use them to test LC syringes.

Bodhisatta, how big is the hole you fill with poly? Have you experienced higher/lower colonization times vs the regular 4 pinholes?

I use a single 3/8 hole with polyfil for my grain jars and that works fine. The PF plastic jars I use it's like maybe 1/4" just one single hole. Colonizes very quickly using 1/4pints. I actually made some without the SHIP just polyfil so that I can use a agar wedge to inoculate them.
