FINISHED! Update 12/6 [Re: SgtPepperNo9]
    #19236556 - 12/06/13 01:22 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I have been busy the past few days but it didn't feel right not finishing out the post with the final update.

Here is the cake that has been going well through the whole process.  Came out to 47.4 wet.  I was pretty pleased for the first flush on my first grow.  I then dried them using a fan for 2 days and then stored with Damprid.  It got them EXTREMELY dry which is good.  I don't know how many of you use Damprid but they sell these buckets that are perfect for these things.  If they were any bigger it would have been a tight fit but given their size it worked perfectly.  It actually comes in a tub with a smaller tub that sits inside.  For the usual intended use you put the damprid in the smaller bucket that has small strainer type holes in it and set it in whatever room you are trying to pull moisture out of.  I just threw some Damprid in the bottom of the tub and used the bucket to hold the shrooms above the Damprid.  IT WAS PERFECT.  Literally required 0 modification and cost less than 5 bucks for 2 tubs.

Anyway here is some pics.

Pre harvest

Post harvest

Some of the more intersting ones.

A few dried

So there you have it...  I cloned one of the bigger faster growing ones into a LC with karo/water.  It will be interesting to see what happens there.  That cake was dunked and is back in the FC, no new signs of pinning yet.  1 of the "smelly" cakes in the smaller FC is showing some great growth and will be ready harvest in another few days.  The one with aerial type myc has a couple of tiny pins on top.  2 more cakes were also added so 6 in fruiting mode now.

I could always post more pics later on but will try and refrain because I am sure you all have seen plenty of PF tek cake pics.  Thanks everyone for the great advice along the way.  Without this site there is no way I would have made it this far.  If anyone wants to see more just ask.

Well in that case might as well show where I'm at.  Something I am really enjoying is the difference between mixes/jars and everything else.  The variables you can change up are interesting especially when you see diff results.

Here is the one I cloned. Grew fastest from pin to mature. I thought the bend was cool too.  How it avoided the container by turning up.

All the gills on these were completely white which I thought was interesting.  They darkened after drying from bruising but no visible spores.  At least that I could see.

Here is a cake I isolated because of the smell.  Now that I have fruited one I am starting to think it is just the a strong mush smell vs. bacteria.  I'm  going to leave it in there though to see what happens.  Maybe the smaller FC will do better, it seems I need to mist more though.  It has a diff light set up so it may be drying it out some.

Pins everywhere.

Dunked original cake on flush 2 bottom right.  Aerial myc cake bottom left.  New upper 2.

Aerial myc cake.  Really small pins you can see a few on top and around the sides here.

Taller jar to experiment with.

Jars colonizing/consolidating.

These are interesting to me.  Plastic jar consolidating that was then birthed into FC.  This and another of the same plastic ones had these invitro pins.

Notice how after the birth it has a diff shape than the typical taller glass.  Wider at the bottom and skinny up top.  I would imagine this means more water will fall towards the bottom.

Thanks for all the support.  Hope you enjoy.

they bend because it's there purpose to get the best spore ejection possible, i had an awesome article about it somewhere but can't remember where right now, for the one with bacteria it's actually a good thing your only misting a little as bacteria thrives in wet enviroments, once it's done flushing just mist once in the morning and once at night to let the cake rest for a few days and dry up a bit and the bacteria should just go away, giving it some direct sunlight for a few minutes a day will also help, for your "taller jar to experiment with" i like to lay those on there sides and find i get much better pinsets doing so, and as for the shape diffrence after birth i believe it's just because the top has been colonized for much longer so it's consolidated more then the bottom, all in all a job well done brutha!

I appreciate the advise and encouragement.  Even thought I haven't posted much I have read threads with some of your names in them so I have respect for what you all have to say.

That would be an interesting article to read.  I like the biology aspect of this whole process.

The plastic jars are actually wider at one end because of the shape of the jar.  It actually has a dip halfway up almost like a stair step at a 45 degree angle.  If I have any success with them I will try and snap a pic of the empty jar to show everyone.  The bacteria cakes are also under a diff light than the big FC.  The larger has a daylight 6500K light as recommended and the other has just a random Red fluorescent that I had lying around. I try to not leave it on all day because it seems to dry them out a bit faster.  They also get indirect sunlight from a nearby window.

More jars will be ready for birth next week so I will let you all know whats up.

Harvest time! Isolated cake update! 12/8 [Re: SgtPepperNo9]
    #19244591 - 12/08/13 11:39 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Okay so you saw where I was 2 days ago.  The cake that I though had a bacterial contam due to the smell has done well.  The more I think about it the more I think it is just the normal smell that I wasn't used to at the time.

I thought now would be a good time to update since I harvested it (partially) today.  Here are some pics that show the progression and things I found interesting.

Here it is a the next morning after the previous post.

The following night.

Veil broken but I waited it out because there multiple other ones that looked like they would be ready soon.  Figured I'd let this one grow out a bit.

This morning.

I harvested everything you see but the smaller ones on the side that still had the veil in tact.  I was debating whether or not these were part of the second flush or first flush based on diff things I have been reading.  Some places act like your 2nd may start with the first but will fall a little behind.  Either way I left them to grow a bit longer and I would think they will be opened up a little more by tonight.

Cake after harvest.  Any ones with gills you see were attached pretty firmly so I couldn't remove them by themselves.

Here are some of the interesting ones I picked.

This is my largest so far.  Being that it is the 2nd flush I have ever dealt with I was pretty excited to watch it grow.

Here is another that stuck together as 3 when harvested.  Below it is another pic of one with the gills turned out.  I noticed that both this cake and my first ever (still on its 2nd flush) had a lot of these mutants.  Both cakes produced all shrooms with white gills, no obvious spores, and a few with these completely turned out caps.  Not to concerned just thought it was neat.

The total harvest.  Keep in mind I am still not positive whether those left on the cake were 1st or 2nd flush.  Added up to roughly 49g wet rounding down.

This is fun

UPDATE with a funky looking PE! 12/12 [Re: SgtPepperNo9]
    #19264882 - 12/12/13 09:01 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So since my last update the pins that were left on the harvested cake grew out a lot.  About 2 days later I harvested them for another 23g wet.  Here are what they looked like at harvest.  Notice the PE cake next to it as this one has grown quite a bit as well.

After harvesting there were STILL some small pins that didn't look bad as if they were going to abort so I held off on the dunk.  So far that cake was only dunked once and hasn't started its 2nd flush.  It is about time now because those small pins have grown out and there are no new pins forming.  I will probably harvest them tonight or tomorrow and dunk it.

Here is a pic of those small pins that will be the 3rd harvest from the 1st flush.  Also check out the PE cake.  This thing exploded over 2-3 days and it still seems to be growing.  I am having a tough time figuring out when I need to harvest these and was just planning on waiting until no more growth was seen.  I think it has to be close as I have read with PE the first harvest is usually small and all mutated.

Umm my PE has a urethra? lol

Here are some other cakes from the big FC.

Bottom L on its 2nd flush, the rest on the first.

There you have it!

If anyone has any advice about that PE cake and if it looks ready let me know.  I am thinking the smaller ones on top may still get a little bigger.  The smaller one along the side grew considerably in the past 24 hours.

Looking good bro!!

That second pic, the one with the long thin stems and small caps....is that just the type of cube, or is that a result of some sort of stress during the grow?  Sorry for the noob question...

^^^What he said^^^

That and I think that cake is probably getting pretty dry.  If you look close in the 1st pic in the post above you will see some really skinny pins in certain spots.  I had left those on the cake after harvesting it 2 separate times without any dunks.  They are still skinny but grew out longer then I thought they would in only a couple days.  Just goes to show you don't HAVE to pick the cake completely clean just because some of them have matured.  That was something I had read a lot of conflicting info about.

12/13 update, TIME TO WEIGHT... [Re: SgtPepperNo9]
    #19272514 - 12/13/13 09:21 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So last night I get home after a 9 hour shift.  This is longer then I would like to leave these completely unattended but I had no choice.  They seemed fine when I got home and here is where they were at.  I harvested the cake with the skinny stems so it is ready for its 2nd dunk.  Only 12.3g wet but I am pretty happy with the total of the 1st flush.

I have noticed my smaller FC seems to perform better.  These were the cakes I thought were contaminated but the more I do this the more I am realizing it is just the mush smell.  I actually don't mind the smell now and after birthing a bunch of cakes tonight and taking care of these others for the past month I am pretty confident it wasn't a negative/bad smell as I initially thought.

After cleaning that cake I turned my attention to the PE cake.  The big one from the last update started to have bluing around the edge of the cap and there was no growth from when I checked in the morning.  I took this as the sign to harvest before it was too late and picked it off.  Check it out...

Bluing after just a minute or 2 after touching it. (sorry they are blurry)

AND THE TOTAL

Here it is after drying for 24 hours or so.

The others I left on there.  They seem to have obvious growth so I figured I would wait it out.

I have seen much more impressive weight on here in other posts but I was pretty happy.  So, in celebration of my now biggest shroom...

My previous biggest (1.3g,dry) and a few skinny friends...

Had a great time.  Nothing crazy, very mellow.  I took this cool pic, at least I thought. I was nervous about posting it for some reason but felt I had to share it since it features the shroomery.  So to comfort myself I made it small, haha.  The text was pretty fun to watch.  Didn't post or anything just watched the screen :mushroom2:

12/20 update, PIN PORN, MUTANTS AND MORE! [Re: SgtPepperNo9]
    #19304306 - 12/20/13 06:15 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So a lot of exciting stuff has happened over the past week or so.  First off, I have learned a TON.  I won't go into it too much because I feel like I could write a full novel about my experiences but the shroomies have taught me SOOOO much.  I have always looked at tripping as a fun learning experience and I must say they haven't let me down.  I have been struggling with my recreational use of different things for a while and a lot of these issues were thrown in my face during my first trip alone.  I had previously always done stuff like this with my girl or with friends when I was younger and partying more.  I dissected my whole life, my relationship, and everything else.  I was able to make decisions about things that I think I have pushed to the back of my mind to avoid dealing with.  Why focus all my energy on my next fun experience when I could focus on making myself better, focus on loving my girl and just being happy.  I have never been so positive, not letting the negative stuff in my daily life get me down.  Why waste that precious time...I'm only going to be here for so long...

Anyway, enough of that.  Here is some updates...

I am running low on spore solution and the LC I made previously isn't working out.  So what better time to try and collect my first spore print!

Here is a PE cake I had with caps that really opened up.  The cake was harvested a day ago but I left this big guy since I chose him for my print.

Here he is today, ready to drop some spores.

Removed and in my printing chamber.

Since my last update a lot of cakes have been birthed and put into the FC.  I must say my cakes are looking much happier with the added company.  Other observations I have made are about the invitro pinning.  The cakes I have left consolidate to the point of pinning exploded much faster in the FC then those that were only left 1 week.  It was hard to let them get to this point originally because I had an empty FC and was anxious to get them in there.  Now that it is full I find the colonizing process a lot easier.  This is really because I don't focus on them as much and my FC gets my attention so the jars just chill, colonizing completely undisturbed.  Before I counted down the days to pull them out of jars and birth.  Now I don't really keep track and just let them sit for as long as possible.

Here is the large FC at this moment.  My smaller one has 2 cakes in it that have been dunked.  They aren't pinning or showing signs of a 2nd flush so why waste the server space with pics?

Ummm....pin porn anyone??  This is a PE cake.

Treasure coast cake.  The one sticking out was an invitro pin.

Albino cake.  The invitro pin on this one is still hugging up against the cake.

PE cake with some good looking pins/fruits along with some blobs and mutants which I find pretty cool.

Siamese PE twins.

Here are some jars colonized. Still waiting for birth.  Already over a week into consolidation but they will probably
sit a week or 2 more.  Just until I feel like it lol.

Other then that I prepped 7 more jars this morning and will probably knock them up tonight.

This is still proving to be a very fun hobby to me. It was originally tough to live with these shrooms as I swear they are begging to be eaten.  BUT as I mentioned in the first paragraph I am past that point.  I am having fun growing them and continue to do so.  My idea is to end up with a stock pile that I can reach into every few months when the time feels right :mushroom2::thumbup:.
