Type "cut mushrooms" in the search bar for a hundred posts answering this question bro.

I thought that if you left any part of the mushroom it could rot and further hurt your cakes.  I was always told to pull from the base of the stem then dunk and roll.

i cut mine, pulling them is so messy and you end up having to cut the shit at the bottom off anyways so you might as well just do it first haha thats just my way though

I pull and twist.  A little water and a toothbrush gets rid of the verm.

You're supposed to cut mushrooms off at the base with a sharp knife to avoid damaging the substrate.  'Twist and pull' is just silly.  It removes chunks of substrate, which leaves openings for molds to get established.

I twist and pull because I've found the substrate is happier without little pieces of fruit rotting on top of it

In nearly 5 decades of growing many tens of thousands of bulk substrates, I've never seen one single stump left after cutting at the base start to rot. It's best not to repeat crap posted by noobs who blame any failure on the tek they used rather than their own mistakes.

I have however seen thousands of grows ruined by green mold which starts in the divot caused by ripping out a chunk of substrate.

Thanks for the tip. I just cased my rye a few days ago into a bulk substrate. This was very helpful.

I like to grab and twist, it works great for most mushrooms I've picked on various substrates. If doing it for casings you can always replace the lost casing material. I personally think that cutting every single mushroom would take to long for me, but I haven't had any contam issues with the twist and pull.

Not saying RR doesn't have a good point, but it is good to experiment and find out what works best for you.

  Good luck!

I think you meant to say you spawned your rye to a bulk substrate.

i too twisted and pulled with my first couple of tubs and never had any issues.  i was very delicate about it.  it never pulled out more of the substrate than the mushroom itself as i kinda wiggled it out.  this was before i was ever told or read otherwise.  after posting pictures of my harvest it was suggested i dont do that.  i since havent.  but, again, i never noticed a difference.

Yea, I cannot even count how many people use the word "casing" in the wrong way.

But this is nothing that can't be fixed.......

They used to refer to a bulk substrate as a casing, but now it just adds confusion. Its called a spawning to a bulk substrate, not casing.

A casing layer is a non nutritious top layer usually applied to a fully colonized bulk substrate for moisture retention and pinning. When you do this it is called casing, see where it can get confusing?

P.Cubensis do no benefit from a casing layer.(usually)

You guys seriously need to stop referring to your substrate trays as 'casings'.  That is an incorrect term unless all you have is a casing layer and no manure, grains, or anything.  Nobody grows mushrooms on 'casings', period.

The casing layer is only the top layer on a colonized bulk substrate, nothing else.  'Casing' sure as hell isn't a name for a mushroom growing project.

I used to twist and pull but started to notice how many pins I was removing when I did this so I started cutting

Ive always done the twist and pull method, out of fear of rot. Apparently im old fashion and outdated.
