Hunting in Golden Gate Park

I have never been to Golden Gate Park before and thought now would be a good time to go check it out. I didn't realize how big the park is and was hoping I could get some feedback on some good areas to start for a little foray. I am not really looking for anything in particular just want to go see what is out there. Are there any rules about picking mushrooms in the park besides basic etiquette? Thanks

Forum rules:
6. No asking when or where mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
7. No requesting or revealing specific locations. Locations NOT allowed: Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Use common sense about what might be considered a specific location. When in doubt, do the moderators a favor and just don't say it.

This will not help you find mushrooms, but I'd like to point out that the Japanese Tea Garden is free MWF if you enter before 10 a.m. and is very much worth seeing.

The funny thing about #7 is that its not being enforced.. ive wanted to point it out, but I have been letting it ride, thinking mods would catch up with it.. but, ive even been seeing mods breaking this rule lately... there have been some seriously specific locations revealed lately... particularly in regards to actives... im not complaining, I personally dont mind knowing peoples spots and what they are picking/seeing, but just saying, things have gotten a bit lax in regards to #7... some locations have been a little less specific, but still not very general ither.. Golden Gate Park has been talked about alot lately, and its been specific as to what people have been finding (Hopefully the park survives the onslaught of amature hunters on a hype)... double no bueno.... #6 isnt really enforced ither...
-but, when you think about it.. with all these rules, what is there left to talk about? .... a little bit of a paradox in the design of these rules... a bit contradictive.. but I know the intentions where to protect and preserve things by regulating the conduct of the users, avoiding a hype or a bust... but where do you draw the line? perhaps its gotten to complex?
I even catch myself often breaking a rule without being fully aware of it... its kinda hard not to... I try.. but the parameters are very narrow... to stay completely within them would almost render this site useless... would just be another forum for social non-sense (like the Pub):
"I saw a mushroom today." -yeah, what kind? "A red one." -Cool, where? "Sorry, there's a rule against that." -Then I guess there is nothing more to say. "Yep." -Yep.
However, I do highly agree with the need to enforce #7....
#6 is a harder one... this MH&I Forum is meant to discuss the nature of mushrooms which is essentially nearly entirely ruled against in #6... maybe its just too vague of a rule? ..maybe it was designed to be that way? ......but then #6 follows through by conflicting itself... you cant ask these things, but you can search past posts for answers to those questions, where they have been discussed before... however, if we cannot as or discuss, then how can we search where we have discussed if we have not discussed to begin with because we are not allowed to? ...makes absolutely no sense IMO... unless its to say that its a new rule and it doesn't effect posts before the rule was put in place.. which would mean all future observations will be left out of future discussions... effectively stopping the evolution of knowledge and information sharing... and then relying on all the archived information from the past that may or may not be correct anymore.....
Frustrating? Confusing? -yeah, I know. Its also to think about.

I suspect rule #6 is what makes this forum about mushroom hunting and IDing rather than a treasure hunt for brats. And then you want some discretion, not zero-tolerance. Just thinking out loud. (I'm not a mod.)

You can discuss when and under what weather conditions you actually found a mushroom; rule #6 is there to prevent repetitive posts, rather than to keep information from circulating. So if I'm a noob who wants to know whether now is a good time to look for Agaricus augustus, I search through old posts and see that there are in fact a fair number of October finds, and I decide to go hunting for it after all. And if I want morels instead, I look through old posts and see that I'll have to wait a while and I resign myself to my fate. (I'm not a mod either, though.)

I think GGP is an exception. Not only is it huge, but people have been picking hallucinogenic mushrooms there for so long that its pretty well known that the park has Psilocybes in it.
That being said, there are very good reasons to not disclose locations in most cases.

Kind of the same way with Astoria area of Oregon, it's such common knowledge that you really aren't giving anything away. The Wikipedia entry for Psilocybe azurscens is the same way... it's no secret.

I usually ride my bike when I go to GGP... in a good day you can traverse most of the park... -and its true its nothing new, but its just an example...
So I guess #6 is not meant to be taken so literally, or at least that seems to be the consensus, which is good... now I don't have to feel like a bastard for talking about the weather. Lol.

Golden gate Psrk has been famous for a very long time with those shrooms, much longer than the Shroomery has existed. There is nothing anybody can do here to make it more famous than it already is
Decades ago one could find decent size patches in GGP, but far too many people are hunting in that park for that to happen again, except maybe rarely
Yes, cyans will always grow in GGP, but you'll never find your own virgin patch that will stay untouched for long. there's just too many people hunting
GGP is good for beginners to get acquainted with it. Spend enough hours and you'll probably find a few
Sure the shroomery helped make it more well known, but it was already well known going back to the 70's. I think some of the first photos of cyans/alleni go back to the 70's with david aurora and his published book and that was golden gate park
I don't think it's possible to make it any worse/famous than it already is

Mentioning a city or a 1000-acre park is probably not in breach of the rules. However asking for SPECIFIC locations certainly is.

This is basically it. It seems as though GG Park was almost the test case here for determining the threshold for how specific a location can be, but asking where within the park to look is probably crossing the line.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
