The red brusing makes me think Galerina.

Its not bruising. That's just how much of the stem was in the mulch. There was no bruising at all. I'm working on spore print. I'm working on a spore print.

It could be Galerina. However, it could, albeit not as likely, also be a Gymnopilus. I would love to see good pictures of the mature mushroom before getting too crazy with an ID. The stipe is definitely fulvescent and appears to be coated in orange spores. In any event, it is not food or drugs and might even be poison.

It is a very stout, thick and tough mushroom. The mushroom as a whole reminds me of the several gymnopilus aeruginosus I found at the beginning of the month, just different cap color and the cap is smooth not textured. Will have to wait a while to get a mature specimen as there were only a few at the location and they were all small. This one is about the size of a U.S. quarter.

What does it smell like?
Does it smell like oysters or hot garbage?

After doing some research on Galerina I believe that's what it is. Thanks for the help. I'm still learning.

Smells earthy to me, like a mushroom.
