Found this in a forest. Just thought it looked kind of interesting and I'm curious about what it is.
Habitat: Forest floor. Ireland. Near some kind of conifer tree I think. Sorry, I thought I had a photo of the tree but I don't seem to have captured it or maybe accidently deleted it.
Gills: Don't know. Specimen hadn't opened yet and I left it there.
Stem: see photo for approximate length etc.
Cap: Ball shaped with spikes on it. White, maybe pinkish.
Spore print color: ?
Bruising: Didn't check

BTW, Can anyone recommend a good mushroom identification book for a beginner? Preferably one that is specific for the UK and Ireland, and I'm particularly interested in edibles, medicinals, and any other interesting species. I've come across few actives and edibles recently and I think I'm getting the bug for this mushroom hunting.

Lycoperdon perlatum, edible if the flesh is all white inside. It's good pan fried in butter, with a consistency similar to tofu. Though it's more geared toward America, Mushrooms Demystified is a great guide and you'll probably find it is still quite useful for Irish mushrooms.

Roger Phillips, Michael Jordan and Stefan Buckzacki all produce very useful field guides but try Collins Complete Guide to British Mushrooms & Toadstools by Sterry & Hughes first. It is fairly comprehensive, has great in situ photos and, while not pocket-sized, is just about small enough to take into the field. The whole Collins Complete range of field guides is impressive; most of them edited by Paul Sterry! You can splash out on more specialised books, and in time you might need to, but for what you are looking for no other UK field guide compares with these ones I've mentioned, and I've seen/bought a lot of field guides!

Much appreciated! I think I might try that Collins guide to get me started anyhow.
