Habitat: Massachusetts, Next to an oak? stump
Gills: White pores
Stem:Didn't cut one
Cap: Around a foot in diameter white/brown
Spore print color: Very important! White
Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
Other information: Seems like its either just popped up or way past prime. It was kind of slimy feeling

I think you're right about it being Maitake, unfortunately, this one looks well past its prime. Check the same spot next year and you might get a fresh one.

I was a little unsure about it because most of them I find turn brown when they are older. Maybe the frost the last few nights kills it?

Looks like some kind of tooth fungus to me - the middle of the second photo shows what looks like a cross section of teeth.

Those are tubes. The pileus broke there.
I guess the hymenium broke too.

Yeah I snapped it off there so you could hopefully see the underside a little better. There's quite the spore coating underneath that spot. I haven't seen that on a hen before

Look at Polyporus umbellatus Looking at the tubes looks like it might be and old one of those.

Do you think it's past its prime?

It looks a little old. Most likely it is grifola frondosa The tubes look a little weird. Looks like its getting a bit old. But. you can dry it and make tea from it. Lots of medical benifits from this species. I collected with several Jappanise torist once and we found a huge one. They all started doing a little dance,They say they call it the dancing mushroom because you do a little dance when you find it.

Haha! I read about it being called the dancing mushroom by the Japanese. These are #5 and #6 for my rookie year
