Would this work?
    #19057560 - 10/30/13 01:08 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I've never grown before, this will be my first time. I've been looking through the forum and I came across this thread about bulk bricks. I didn't understand the whole concept, but I think I got the basic idea.

If I bought this:
http://www.magic-mushrooms-shop.com/en/mycomater-kilo-kit.html

And put the substrate in this to colonize:
http://www.magic-mushrooms-shop.com/en/grow-box-empty.html

Would I be able to take the brick out once it's 95-100% colonized, and just set it inside the filter bag to grow and get a bigger yield that way?

Edit: I read that if you have nothing lining the sides of your substrate once it's colonized you'll get more pins and a bigger yield. If that's incorrect please let me know.

I want to say yes it would work. The only thing I have against those bags are a lot of them seem to stall due to not enough moisture in them.

As far as having something lining them just use a black trashbag turned inside out because the inside of the bag is sterile and the outside may not be.

Or you can paint the outside black with spraypaint or something.

EDIT: I guess I was wrong, I always thought it was a combination of lighting and the microclimate, I need to read some more about it I guess.

As far as moisture goes, I don't see it being an issue, because they'll be in a very controlled environment.

A 5 x 10 storage unit with one electrical outlet. Just enough plugs for me to put a space heater, and an air purifier in. And the lighting of the unit is a single flourescent light, or T5. I can't remember. But I have to go to the unit to turn on the light for 2 hours a day, so I'll keep my supplies there and just mist the insides of the bags as needed to keep up the moisture.

With the space heater I'll be able to keep a 23-27 celcius temperature constantly, and the air purifier will help with contaminants in the air.

Painting the outside black won't prevent side pinning. The reason for the side pins is the proper microclimate on the sides when the substrate is pulling away from the box. This creates the perfect conditions for pinning.  If you use a liner which could be transparent it sticks to the substrate and shrinks with it and you won't have side pins

I'm confused.. Are side pins a bad thing? In the thread where I got this idea the guy had side pins on his bricks and he still pulled a 130g flush. Do they prevent the top of the substrate from pinning properly or something?

I mean moisture inside of the bag. While your mycelium grow it uses the moisture inside of the BRF mix or whatever grains you may be using and if the moisture runs out before it is fully colonized that is stalling.

The reason those bags run into problems is because you can't be sure when they were done, bad climate during shipping or a number of other variables.

As long as the site has good reviews for their bags then it shouldn't be a problem. You just don't want to waste a couple of months and then have it stall on you and get contaminated.
