Anybody know if benzos are derived of something or are they complete man made chemicals? Are there any plants out there that have similar highs?

I was reading just now that the only known natural occurring benzodiazepines are found in fungi. Apparently they are only found in species of Aspergillus, Penicillum, and Streptomyces.
There are plant chemicals that act similarly to benzodiazepines though. Valerian comes to mind. Isovaleric acid is not a benzodiazepine but it does act on GABA receptors.

Valerian root has a similar effect, though not nearly as apparent as benzos.

kava kava, and like someone said.. I remember finding one of those mushrooms in the forest with my friends. He said it makes you feel sorta drunk, but that the effects are usually unpleasant.
Oh and if you get kava, dont get the capsules. They suck.

I remember trying valerian years ago, before my benzo addiction. Do you think it'd help with anxiety or insomnia for a recovering benzo addict?

Im not sure if it will help with your benzo addiction. But if you do try it... get the fresh ground up shit to make tea. Key word being FRESH. Order online would be my suggestion.
Another interesting anxiolytic ive heard of just recently is lemon balm. Havent tried it, but its supposed to be pretty effective... and is also used as mosquito repellent!
