Tanks K1ngSp4de for suggesting this subforum idea!
To anyone reading this, I'll be an active part of the subforum, and primarily specialize in troubleshooting with Windows operating systems, but as time goes on I'll be able to help with Linux!

People sometimes use the science and tech forum or the pub for that kind of thing but a dedicated forum sounds pretty cool.

I'll support your forum if you promise to take out all the computer crap from the science forum.

This is right, and I think we'll have to get admin go-ahead to talk about things like Poorboy is talking about. Anyways there is already a security forum for that.
Linux is a great OS, if you can get around in it. I have bootstrapped a couple gentoo installs, only to get to a prompt. What distribution do you run Poorboy?
Please post-in or make a thread in the forum so those of you with knowledge can check if people need help with things in your expertise. I myself am behind in the times, but can donate my time to moderate the forum.

The NSA and microsoft as pretty much hand in hand, mutual sex friends. Also I think with TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) it was that it allowed secret, remote access to the computer, and access to the crytographic (encryption) keys and passwords contained within.
I'm more than positive if the NSA wanted to, they could hack into your linux box, and probably have malware they keep to themselves that can do this.
Essentially, if the NSA wants you, you're fucked.
However if you are comparing Windows and Linux when accessing the regular Internet, and facing the threats that any average user will face, Linux is by far more secure. There are far fewer linux viruses in "the wild," than there are for Windows machines.
The average amount of time a Windows machine can use the Internet without getting infected is 30-45 seconds. (I got this number from a research document I read awhile back)
Here's the thing though, with the NSA, it mostly relies on Packet filtering and data monitoring. They do this by controlling routers that are either attached to the Internet backbone, or close to it. No matter how damn secured your Linux box is, them routers will be filtering and capturing the packets.
You can take measures to "protect" this data, such as encrypting it, using SSH tunnels, VPNs, proxies, etc... But the NSA being the bid bad boy that it is, can pretty much crack any of these encryption methods with enough time.

That's nice and all, unfortunately the NSA has some of the worlds best super computers and can crack almost any Encryption out there given enough time (Read Edward Snowden articles)

I hate to smash your dreams, but it is entirely false my good friend The NSA does most of it's surveillence through the use of monitoring Telecommunications logs, Packet sniffing/filtering.

This. That being said, if your running linux ur a hell of alot safer from the rest of the world. Been running gentoo straight for 3 months and have never looked back. Best decision i ever did. Every box i scan running MS always has numerous vulnerabilities to exploit. Not quite the case for those on 'nix. Assuming you know what your doing that is..

Last I checked nobody even knows what it does, but I'm a bit outdated on pcs since I got a smart phone. Any time you install anything you risk possible security.

Man when I read about that awhile back, I fucking lol'd. Never trust anything with the NSA seal of approval on it.

Well it's safer to everyone but the big bad NSA, FBI, and probably the foreign versions of those intelligence agencies.
Agreed! I just recently made the move to Linux (Ubuntu 12.04LTS) and I'm loving every second of it, will move to a more technical version of *nix later on.
