It sure looks like olivieri, Chlorophyllum for sure. The stem should separate from the cap (sometimes with difficulty) and the resulting wound will bruise orange, then brown. If you get this color reaction with a chlorophyllum of that size it is safe to eat whether it's olivieri, rachodes (rhacodes), brunneum or hortensis. Good eatin' in any case. Brunneum has been implicated in minor stomach upset in southern California. I think this may be a matter of mistaken ID with C. Molybdites. In old age and wet weather most species in this complex can develop green stains on the cap. They are no good for eating if you see any green and will indeed cause stomach upset for several days IME, though no vomiting. in this species complex only specimens in good condition can be trusted. Chlorophyllum olivieri may be my favorite mushroom for flavor. Huge meaty and nutty, though the texture isn't noteworthy. If they bruise orange first, enjoy them. I surely would!

Chlorophyllum olivieri

Hey Alan, I've noticed recently that people in America are calling this shaggy species C. olivieri, and the white one with scales C. rhacodes. Now, in all of the books I have, C. rhacodes is the 'shaggy parasol', and looks like the OP's pictures. Why is there such disparity between authors? Do you perhaps have a link or a paper describing those two species? I'd be very grateful, this subject interests me for some reason!
Here's a picture from my book, as you can see, the shaggy one is named as (M.)C. rhacodes.

Btw, OP, sorry for derailing your thread, but it could be viewed as kinda relevant! :super:

LOL!  I had the same problem but it did eventually load.  Googling Else Vellinga and Chlorophyllum should get you the same result.

Ok... I'll recant my post above. If they bruise orange best not eat them. Dry them and send them to me for further research

I'm very familiar with olivieri because it's one of my favorites. Those look like rachodes (rhacodes) to me. The harder, browner scales and the size are my reasons. Still wonderfully edible but not quite as strong in flavor as olivieri. What happened to the OP???
