So much lame jazz
    #19030490 - 10/25/13 11:01 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Even big names who are geniunely skilled end up making jazz that just sounds so damn lame. Smooth jazz groups especially. Stuff like this is not welcome:

Uh, god. This is supposed to be jazz?

Anyway, here you can post jazz that's good. Akira, that means you lol. I like fusion. Very fond memories of Bitches Brew and other electric Miles albums.

My favorite jazz album of all time has to be Dave Holland's Extended Play: Live at Birdland. God that is some serious fucking jazz. Youtube doesn't have it but grooveshark does.

Jazz is a very broad genre, like electronic, I know. Just play stuff you dig and I might discover something new. I am not an aficionado.....because too much jazz is lame to me. But check out Extended Play for some real jazz. Especially the tracks Claressence, Prime Directive, The Balance, Metamorphosis, and perhaps Juggler's Parade for its tight vibes (vibraph goes on forone)

If you listen, make sure you can hear the bass. It's low on this album but the (double) bassist is the band leader, Dave Holland, who played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew. Edit: Well the non-existent bass is only because I'm using a laptop, so headphones are a must if you are doing that.

But all the players are good, and this album is the best live jazz I've ever heard, to this day. The interplay between these guys is almost transcendental.

There's a duet with just Chris Potter's sax and Robin Eubanks' trombone that goes on from 2:46 to 6:20 (out of 8 min song) in Prime Directive. That's what I'm talkin' about.

If you think you like smooth jazz, listen to The Balance. Similar, but much more jazzy.

http://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=the+balance+extended+play

Claressence: http://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=claressence

Prime Directive: http://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=prime+directive+extended+play

Metamorphos http://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=metamorphos+extended+play

Free For All: Forgot to mention this one is great as well. http://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=free+for+all+extended+play

You'll require patience and actually listening to the music to get through these, but it'll be well worth it, as you come to experience jazz as it should be defined. Or something.

I agree with you, I hate that smoothed out no-balls pussy jazz. I like my jazz dirty and unpredictable! Jazz at it's best is my favourite music in the world, Bitches Brew ftw!

If you've never listened to Pharoah Sanders you're missing out! If you can find the live album Heart Is A Melody give Ole a spin, one of the greatest moments in jazz history for me. It's on youtube but it's not complete, no bass solo or final sax solo so I suggest finding the complete version!

More albums to check out if you're interested:

Pharoah Sanders - Thembi, easy start as the songs are quite mellow and short. Great stuff!

Pharoah Sanders - Tauhid, getting deeper. One of my all time favourites!

Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity, completely insane album with just one song. Some great duet double bass playing if you're into that!

Alice Coltrane - Journey in satchidananda, best jazz for tripping, mostly positive vibes but it gets a bit noisy towards the end. Also features Pharoah!

Alice Coltrane - Ptah El Daoud

Charles Mingus - Black Saint and The Sinner Lady, trip through infinite number of different moods. Highly recommended!

Sadly I haven't got grooveshark so I'll try to find those songs you posted somewhere else. As a bassplayer I've heard of Dave Holland but never really listened. I'll let you know what I think!

All shroomery jazz heads, let's post some Jazz with some BALLS!

Dave Holland is a beast!

And Bitches Brew, man that's an album worth checking out on shrooms

Not sure if you guys will like this one but I think it's a beautiful song, I recently transcribed the changes for it too if anyone is interested.

Charlie Haden - Silence

I like Charlie Haden, really melodic approach to bass! I'll check out that song soon, I'm just blasting some Ornette Coleman! I have 1 album by Haden, Closeness Duets, For Turiya is a magnificent duet with Alice Coltrane on harp!

Post some more jazz tunes man, judging by your username and the song you posted you know something! And check out Ole by Pharoah Sanders from Heart Is A Melody if you haven't heard it!

Yeah I love his bass playing too, he gets a great deep tone out of the instrument and as you said his lines are really melodic.

I'll have to check out some of your suggestions tomorrow, I'm about to head to bed. I like the tune Ole, I'll check out Pharoah's take. If you haven't you should listen to Ole Coltrane. It's not his greatest imo but it's still great :tongue2:

I'm certainly no pro when it comes to jazz but I do love it.

Not sure if you guys have seen this one, but I reckon it's pretty sweet

I love that record, especially the title song. Once again the bassplaying is remarkable, and the intensity of the song is phenomenal! But I must say, even as a huge Coltrane fan, Pharoah kills that tune!

I don't listen to a lot of vocal jazz, so this was a nice change. I still prefer raw sax solos over singing bur maybe I need to explore the genre a bit further.

Oh me too (prefer sax to vocals), just thought I'd post something that contrasts the other vid

Did you check it out? I'd be curious to know what people think of that one.

Anyway thanks for the recommendations, I'll check some of them out tomorrow as I'm off to dreamland now, hopefully that is.

It mightn't immediately sound like Jazz, or at least not traditional Jazz, but I really love the music of a bunch of Norwegian Jazz dudes, including:

Nils Petter Molvær
Eivind Aarset
Arve Henriksen

Vilderness - Nils Petter Molvær

Wolf Extract - Eivind Aarset

Spyro gyra is pretty much all the jazz I love, I must expand my musical horizions.

Rocks speak to me, and tell me this:
The Hell Creek formation is a gigantic slab of rocks that covers several western states. It contains an account of the dinosaurs' demise.  In the late Cretaceous period, the first Cannabis species appear, and soon after, all the non-bird dinosaurs disappeared. Obviously, marihuana killed the dinosaurs. That giant meteor that smacked the yucatan peninsula right afterwards, coincidence.

Nils Petter is great, I've only listened to his Khmer album so far but I'll add him on my list of artists that need to be explored! Thanks for the reminder!

Akira, lots of unheard stuff in your post, I'll give them a spin. Of course I'm already familiar with Dolphys' Out To Lunch, fantastic album!

I've been getting into Sun Ra lately, he has way too many albums to just randomly listen to songs on youtube so I've tried to focus on a few select records to get into this weird world that is Sun Ra.

Check out this great German band Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, slow, catatonic Twin Peaks influenced jazz, perfect for dark nights and lonely walks

Sunset Mission Full Album

Some easy access Pharoah Sanders, perfect for a sunday

Keep them coming!

Check out 'The American Compilation' - really nice mix of stuff, and it has a great flow. Also, I like 'Recoloured: The Remix Album' - pretty fun tracks, and, again, a nice mix of stuff.

Erik Truffaz and Murcof

Fucking album is so good. I wish album versions of the other tracks were on Youtube. The first track is so good.
