Do idm electronic artists make money?
    #19054817 - 10/29/13 10:50 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Anyone here listen to any idm music like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Zomby, etc....?

Do you think some of the more popular idm artists make a living on their music?

Some of them don't seem to tour that much so I don't know, I've wondered if any of them work random day jobs, plus a lot of idm fans probably download their music nowdays...

Maybe some of them make money on random commercials and stuff.

Aphex Twin is pretty popular, as is Square Pusher.  I'm sure they both do alright.  Don't really know about the less mainstream musicians, but I'm sure it depends on how expensive their setup is.  EDM artists generally have potential to make a lot more cause they don't have to pay as many people.

No doubt they make money. If not solely off their music, then touring, physical CD's, merch, etc.

I've always liked to think that IDM artists don't make their music for the money. But I digress.

Aphex Twin- Stone in Focus is probably one of the greatest pieces of music I've listened to

Indeed. While the atmosphere is quite different, I feel the same way about BoC - Dayvan Cowboy.

I think they (the more popular ones) probably make quite good money. Artists like BOC and Aphex Twin seem to be able to lay relatively low for professional musicians. I doubt they're off working at Target (or whatever the fuck equivalent is in the UK) in between albums. And I'm sure they do plenty of other stuff besides release albums, but still, you get my point. I think.

Also I have to say I don't much like the label Intelligent Dance Music. Stone in Focus for example is a little beyond labels. It's a purely subjective experience in which there is so much to find, despite it's simplicity. Much more than dance music.

MystiqueMushroom You'd probably like Hammock then

I was thinking more like... work on soundtracks or other random music-related things. But yeah, maybe they're all just crack dealers when they're not working on albums.

It's also an obnoxiously pretentious genre name.

I just think it's really funny to have terms like that. It's basically saying 'this is intelligent and everything else is stupid.' It's really nasty to everyone else's music. (laughs) It makes me laugh, things like that. I don't use names. I just say that I like something or I don't

I always thought it would be funny to see Boards of Canada working a regular job while they seem to be pretty damn big but I guess they probably do make a lot of money....  They were even doing some stuff on Adult Swim when they announced their new album.    I guess it's different for different artists.

Some IDM artists like Four Tet seem to do some touring too.  Zomby plays show but supposedly he backs out of some of them randomly lol.  His music is cool but he seems to be kind of douchy if you look at his twitter account he also seems to wear a mask when he is seen in public usually.  :fawkes:

aphex twin makes bank.  People probably hand him blank checks.

i've noticed squarepusher recently has like a big marketing push with facebook and his website and shit.  I bet he wishes he had capitalized a little harder on his earlier fame.

I saw him at bisco and his set sucked.  Was EDM, and sounded like something I would hear at a frat house.  Was super disappointing, I really like his older music.

yeah i'm pretty fanatical about his ultravisitor album.

I dunno man, his newest one whatever it was, it sounded pretty darn amateur.  weird i dunno he likes to fuck around and doesn't give a fuck so he might still put out good stuff again.

Was it after that Shobaleader One album came out? Because that album sucked.

They were doing A LOT when the new album was announced. Even the announcement itself was a big fucking deal on Record Store Day. They may not be the most popular guys in the world, but they have a rabid following and are one of the more popular acts among people who actively follow music.

yeh, Hammock is wicked.

PS: i don't know how you guys don't like Ufabulum. Shoeblader One sucked, but Ufabulum was just another Squarepusher album. like most, it's pretty damn good. it's not a Hard Normal Daddy, or an Ultravisitor or a Music is One Rotted Note but it's as expansive and decent as any of his less big albums.

The mixdown on the whole album is garbage.  Some of the instruments are just unreasonably loud and it doesn't seem stylistic.  I dunno the whole thing is kinda lofi

you better believe aphex twin has bank. i doubt the b of c guys have to work either. the upper level guys who are household names make money. the lesser known guys who have been around tend to make a living, especially the ones who are working dj's.
