Hypholoma fasciculare & purple-brown friend ...
    #19043736 - 10/28/13 12:53 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

The H. fascists are taking over the forest!  The yellow guys are sulphur tufts, right?

I'm wondering if anyone knows what the smaller brown purple ones are growing beneath them?  I'm talking about the ones in pics 1, 3 and 5.  They look pretty cool.

I don't know what you area is like, but in most of mine, the hypholomas have been among the few mushrooms which hang around when most other species have called it quits for the year.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Wow, G. luteofolius would be a cool find (and a first for me)!  I see how they look like some of the younger ones here, but mine have lighter scales on a darker background while the G. luteofolius in those picks have darker scales on a lighter background.  Am I making a relevant distinction?  Anyways, I'll be getting some samples for sure now.

How confident are you in the genus?

@canid: this particular park/trail system has signs everywhere saying that all the trees are infected with "laminated root rot".  Could that have something to do with the abundance of H. fasciculare?  Doesn't seem like things are calling it quits around here anytime soon ...

Wait for those to be more mature before you get a sample, it will make IDing them far easier and will let them drop their spores.

The others are indeed Hypholoma fasciculare.

The other species is an Armillaria not a Gymnopilus.

Thanks for the IDs everyone.  I've got some measurements and photos of some more matured of the Armillaria.  I'm hoping you guys can help me verify that these are Armillaria: I'd like to try eating them so I really want to be sure.  I'm doing spore prints now so I'll have info on that by tomorrow (but they do appear to be white).

Caps are 3-4cm wide.

Stipe is ~1cm at top and ~1.5cm at base and is 6-10cm long.

The seven photos below are of mushrooms taken from the same spot as the
originals from above.

These were in a different location but might be the same.  What do you think?
