pleurotus pulmonaris / ostreatus on straw
    #1905425 - 09/11/03 02:56 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

greetings fungophiles. my oyster babies are pinning! grain spawn was prepared, and grew to 100% colonised in about 10 days...

. .
- pleurotus pulnmonaris (thanks zeronio!) and pleurotus ostreatus (thanks paid!)

then the spawn was mixed with cooled pasteurised straw, and put into the fruiting containers: the pulmonaris was put into a plastic basket and a plastic bag, and the ostreatus into a plastic bag only. the bags were stabbed multiple times in a frenzied way, as if as part of a psychotic and unnecessary attack!

these three containers were put in a plastic tub on an inch on wet perlite, with fishtank airtube for air exchange, plus a couple of fannings daily.

. .

my tub contains an inch of wet perlite, and has an airpump feeding in fresh air. this is what they look like, as of this morning:

. .

i recommend these plastic tubs - try your local chinatown or oriental supermarket, this one held dragon eyes (a fruit) but they're used for all sorts of fruits and veg that are flown in long distance. go get some!

you can click on this one, but it won't get any bigger   ....

Very nice !

I'm gonna have to get me some of those plastic tubs from my local chinese supermarket.

If you fancy trading your Pleurotus pulmonarius for Pleurotus citrinopileatus (Golden Oyster) let me know !

yours haven't pinned yet  :frown: but they are a different species.

of zero's pulmonaris, the basket kicked the sainsburys' bags into touch, so your ostreatus may take a little longer. the paid bag is the bottom right one in the shot where all three are visible and the yellow basket is on the left. fingers crossed!

stay cool, daddio

I like the containers. How long did it take from the time the grain was 100% colonised to see pins?

I just noticed your using sainsbury's bags, nice touch !

I've been using non sterilized bread bags for mini straw logs with good success for a while now but might have to give the shopping bags a try as you can obviously cram alot more in.

How durable are they ? Does the straw pierce the bags at all when you pack it down ???

update: .... i picked and ate a few big open ones before taking this shot. couldn't resist. delicious.

the sainsburys bags are strong enough to hold the straw in. also cheap. but i can only recommend the basket so far from this experiment.
as concretefeet put it: "looks like my clothes need a wash"

Very impressive! I'm growing p. ostreatus for the first time as well.

What ratios did you use for the bran spawn? 4:1 wood/bran ?

What kind of spawn are you using?
