Oyster Mushrum? * 1
    #19053489 - 10/29/13 06:40 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Well I was on my bike when I saw some mushrooms growing at the very base of a tree, a cottonwood or elm (i couldnt tell because it had no leaves ).

It was a cluster of about 3-4 caps and the biggest is about 4 inches across, light and it broke away from the tree feeling styrofoamy.

color was golden brown

gills went all the way down the stem

the stem was barely present at all, it was basically just caps coming out of the base of the tree.

spore print is in the works...

If it is an Oyster i'll clone it.

here are the pictures:

Thanks!

Maybe. The cracked cap makes me think Agaricus but im not A TI. its growing from the base of the tree also, oysters are more likely on fallen trees and can be up far in a live tree as well. If the spore print is white or lavender u might have some oysters to cultivate! Nice finds!

Not Agaricus.
Possibly Pleurotus but I'm not confident about that just by looking at those pics.
Spore print?

Spore print would settle it but I think they are Pleurotus sp.

The last picture makes it look like they grow directly out of the tree without a real stipe. There's no way they're Agaricus. Oyster seems very likely but I want a better picture of the underside showing gill attachment.

I took the spore print on foil and it was white, didnt try to take a picture because my camera is not spectacular.

The tree looked dead to me.

I do not think it is agaricus because i saw no evidence of a veil, it was growing out of the tree (not the ground around the base) and the gills were decurrent, travelling down the short stalky stipe into the tree.

Anything else it could be besides Pleurotus?

You should try growing them! it's not too difficult, for experimentation you could simply soak that cardboard spore print in water and then layer it between other moistened cardboard. Might grow some mycelium out of it.

Or try the same method but use fresh stem butts wedged in the cardboard. anyway you do it, it is fun and rewarding! just try, you'll be amazed how the oyster wants to help you grow.

Also i just want to explain the last picture, i harvested 2 of the mushrooms and you can see the bright white area is where it was torn away from it's host tree. The remaining mushroom exemplifies what i would consider decurrent gills.

Just thought I would update this thread with some fruiting pictures.

Spore Print

Taking tissue samples onto agar

Colonizing the agar

Running the mycelium through grains

Pasteurizing some sawdust/woodchips - steam is pumped into the cooler until internal temps reach 140-170

Inoculating the wood substrate bags

Pins!

MMm yummy! Thank you all for the help identifying!

That's a unique way of doing agar. Are the insides of plastic bags sterile? I've thought of things like that, and used ziplocks as grow bags but didn't think they were quite that clean.

Awesome grow by the way.

I didn't know that agar in zip-lock bags works perfectly fine! Did you pressure-cook them or anything?
