PGP question!! This guy is starting to worry me...
    #19052533 - 10/29/13 03:44 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I'm speaking to someone using PGP encryption.  We had done this for a little while with no issues.  Then he no longer is able to "find my key" or something, so I simply copy and paste it to him, thinking this should solve any problem.  He keeps asking me what my "nick on the key is".  I ask him what he's talking about and he's like "the nickname you used for the key" or something.  Which I never made any "nickname".

He goes on to say that his key list is soo huge and whatever so what's the nick on my key.  Again I tell him I don't know what he's talking about.  Wouldn't any nickname in his keylist be something that HE made?  Why don't I know what "nick" he's talking about?

Is this some kind of BS attempt to stall or buy himself some time?  I'm currently waiting on something that is late that's why I ask.  Also, what can you guys tell me that can help this PGP communication that I don't know?  This guy doesn't speak english as his first language so it's not as easy as it should be maybe.

The thing is, I don't have any "nickname" for his key.  I just copy the damn key in and encrypt it and then copy the output to him.  Boom.  Simple.  So why can't he just copy the new key that I've sent to him like 3 times and encrypt it to me?  I don't get it but I'm getting frustrated.

i think depending on the program used some do have a name you add when making a key, at least when i used pgp it always had a fake email or name attached to each key

When you make a key it asks for your name.  You don't have to put a real name, but you have to put something.

You should figure out what your key says and tell him.

With gpg it is "gpg --list-keys" to see your keys and the assosciated names, pgp has similar functionality.

Well I've been using that igolder thing, I'm sure it is not the most secure but its easy and doesn't take up space on my computer...  I may not be able to determine what screen name I used I guess.  Maybe I'll have to make another one.  However, what's weird is that we communicated fine for a while without ever having to tell him an email address or anything at all.  All I ever did was copy in the public into the message and that was it.

People lose keys if their pc completely bites the dust or if they change identities, so it's really not that suspicious. Regiving the information doesn't put your identity any more in jeopardy.

No I gave him the info.  I copied the public key info to him every time he ever asked what my nickname was because i really dont recall it.  That's what I find strange.  I keep giving him my public key but he keeps acting like he can't give me any info because he's not able to encrypt a message to me for some reason.

Generate a new key and remember the nickname you used next time. Never give him the private key and you'll be fine.

the only thing it has asked me for is an email address. Which, nothing was ever sent to and I'm pretty sure its not used for any purpose other than maybe as this "nickname"...  I don't know I guess that's what he means.

Not necessary, you can make pgp or gpg tell you.  Also he can get it from your key, when you add a new key it tells you that info.    Sounds like he is a new pgp user.

Well, I'm not so sure about that.  May not have a deep understanding of it beyond the most basic uses of it.  Which is totally what I am, so likely it's my fault to be quite honest.
