It should be brown. And non-rhizomorphic. From what I remember.
Sounds like you have something else.

Can range from pure white to dark brown, depending on the strain. It's fuzzy and non rhizomprphic. Here is a white strain Here is a brown strain

The ones I have grown out will also form sclerotia when the plate reaches 100% usually only 4 or 5 days from initial transfer.

Mine went dark brown, which I was concerned about, 'till I read Stamets saying it resembles squirrel (which I've never seen, but assume is dark brown). On grain I'm getting brown/orange blobs I hope are sclerotia.

wait. so the dark brown under the myc is not mold? i have about a sleeve worth of plates inoculated with spores that I thought were fucked cause they've been sitting for about 2 weeks. may not be since there's not any black or green mold about...
these spores were from yellow, brown, and black morels. I'm not even trying to approach morel phylogeny/taxonomy. seems like a mess.

No the brown is morel Myc. Unbelievable diversity in color nd for in this species. I am confounded by it time and again. I have a pure white strain now that is acting very strange and a grey strain I am trying to isolate.

I have a Morchella esculenta culture that I have put to agar a few times, and it baffled me the first time too. The agar wedge I was sent had a deep brown color, and I was initially going to ask the supplier what formula they used for the agar, until my plates got to be a few days old, and my own MYA was starting to darken.
After a week or so it was a dark tan, and another week later the dish was overrun with sclerotia and very dark brown. The things about morel myc that confused me at first were the growth, which is very fast, but thin initially. 3 days after inoc, if you glanced at the plate, you would not think it was colonizing, but upon closer inspection, the plate was at about 80% with very hard to see myc. Within a week the myc seemed to thicken, but this was not until the plate was fully colonized. The other interesting point is how the mycellium seemed to stain the agar, as the coloration was not just located at the surface wehre the growth was, but rather through the thickness of the agar, making it look like a different recipe entirely. This class definitely seems to throw out the book on standard visual clues and timing...
