Red cargo rice not working so well
    #19051109 - 10/29/13 09:24 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My initial finding that red rice did not work well was totally wrong. It is actually pretty good and seems to flush well. I can however not compare it to brown rice since I have found none in the stores close to me.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone,

I have just tried making cakes with red rice instead of brown rice. Now this test is definitely not conclusive but here they are: red rice does not work as well.

Now what was my setup and to what am I comparing it?
I made five syringes at once. That is I mixed spores, water and water based sex lube in a sterile jar and made five syringes. (note I used a lot of lube)

Then I made some brown rice flour cakes and injected them and soon the mycellium was growing.

The syringes were stored in the fridge for about a week and then I used one to inject a few jars of red rice flour cakes. Now a 10 days have gone by and there is just a few spots of white in less than half the jars.

The syringe may have been damaged in the storage but I see no evidence of bacterial growth or mold so maybe something just killed the spores (all that lube?).

Is there anyone else that has a report on red rice growing? I will try to remember to post my final conclusion when the grow is finished or maybe do a side by side with brown rice.

Any thoughts?

Using MS to run tests does not lead to valid conclusions.

Well yes it does. When I am comparing 18 Multi-Spore brown rice with 9 Multi-Spore red rice I get a statistical average that tells me something. All the reds are doing badly and all the browns are doing well.

For me the question is mostly about whether there is something wrong with the substrate or syringe.

Red Rice is more nutrient dense than brown rice.

It has been said that myc colonizes highly nutritious substrate slower than less nutritive counter parts.

One theory is that this is because the rhyzomorphs aren't searching out for food as aggressively in high nutrient media.

This can be shown on agar.

Well that is very interesting and promising and of course a bit sad. Would have hoped that the better they were fed the further they would spread.

Guess it is like with the ladies: Treat'em mean and keep'em keen!
