Gymnopilus punctifolius has a weird stem like that, I'm not saying those are them. It's just something to be aware of.

I bet it just grew out of th knot-hole or crack in such a way that it was nearly bound to end up like that.
That looks like several Gyms to me. G. junonius comes immediately to mind.
I can't remember if I ever knew what area you're in, Raf.

I'll put my chip on G. aeruginosus. They can have gnarly tapering stems like that too.

I believe I had found aeruginosus and it also had a gnarled stem. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19034155

Wow that is an interesting find. Doesn't look like the aeruginosus I find here in GA on woodchips , but that really is a beautiful Jilm. Could it be purpuratus?

That was what the debate was about. I'll never know until I get a mycologist to look at it with a microscope. G. Purpuratus isn't in a 648 pg. guide book of fungi in Japan or my guidebooks. I only found it on one Japanese website. I'd assume I found a native species (aeruginosus) and I can't find any info to support that purpuratus is native.
Funny, If I saw the ones you posted a pic of in the forest...I'd say it's the same.
I think aeruginosus is going out of season. To date I've found 5 fruiting bodies.

exactly, I gently excavated that gym out of that small hole in the last picture. It was easily 6-7 inches down into the trunk of the tree

G. punctifolius has an olive green hue. I like that word, hue.

I did mean to suggest that they are punctifolius, I was merely noting that they have stems sorta similar to these. And as Canid mentioned; "I bet it just grew out of th knot-hole or crack in such a way that it was nearly bound to end up like that." I agree with him, seems likely.

I think most tricholomatoid mushrooms can develop this type of stipe in the appropriate habitat. I've observed both G. luteus and G. "spectabilis" do this in the last month. I got what you meant though, May. punctifolius always seems to have a jacked up stipe. Im sure there is a word to describe that specific gestalt, but it escapes me currently.
