Come on, use your imagination a little.  There are tonnes of ways to stablize the bit.

Because glass is hard, it'll wear down the sharp point/edges.

Your average glass has a hardness of 5 last I checked.

In other words its relatively soft.

Id wager you could drill a few holes before it got dull.

I use drill bits for a living, using the right drill bit makes a job way easier. Masonay bits work good in concrete, but can barely drill through wood, even though wood is not as hard. Metal bits work good in metal, but get ruined after drilling into concrete after 2 seconds.

Drill bits work good for what they're designed for and are usually shitty at drilling through other stuff.

Like I said It would be a pain in the ass and you would ruin some bits and break some glass, theres really no way to get around it.

Steel is a 4-4.5 on mohs scale, glass is a 6-7, it wil not work well.

I use drill bits for a living too...  tempered steel is 6-6.5 and normal glass is 5.

I think regular metal drilling bits could work.

that is my final answer.

My scale says glass is betwee 6 and 7, but it's not all about hardness anyways, it's about design.

True enough.  I'd prefer a special glass bit but if I were cheap and didn't want to buy one I know a carbon steel bit could work too.

If that's all your scale says for glass it surely is bunk. There's like ten kinds of common glass types and they are not the same strength.

Idk, it had a couple different kinds of glass at other numbers, but it had just "glass" between 6 and 7, I'm guessing whatever kind they were referring was the most common type.

A regular bit chews and I think chewing glass at high rpms may not end well.

those little paddle bits so many are suggesting that you buy will do the same
you'll probably break several before one drills through

get a real diamond bit, clamp the bottle in place under a drill press, low
RPMs and a slow feed and coolant are best, the coolant is mostly for the bit

I don't think he has a drill press..
also I'd like to know what you consider low rpm.? because we would always use 3000+ rpm to bore precision holes in glass.. the slower rpm's 2000- would always break the workpiece..

seems like it pops and cracks into bigger chunks and pieces at low rpm..

I only worked as a glazier for several years, drilled countless holes in
glass and mirrors which coincidentally are made of glass, low RPM is around
200-500 rpm, 3000 rpm is way too high especially with a hand drill because
people simply dont have a steady enough hand to do it. you want bits that
abrade the surface, not one that chips away at it which is why those
carbide bits break a shitload of glass
