idk if this was said yet but...
You should be fine with the duct tape because the bit doesn't have grooves like a regular drill bit.

That is exactly what I was thinking but unless you use one you don't know. If its a grinding type though I would imagine it would clog up fast like sand paper on a sticky surface

I have used them many times, but never over tape.
these are the kind I use, they seem like they'd be fine and should just rip through the duct tape with no real incident...

those little paddle bits so many are suggesting that you buy will do the same you'll probably break several before one drills through
get a real diamond bit, clamp the bottle in place under a drill press, low RPMs and a slow feed and coolant are best, the coolant is mostly for the bit

Use a special drillbit like everyone has said, but do it under running water so the glass doesnt heat up and crack.

I don't think he has a drill press.. also I'd like to know what you consider low rpm.? because we would always use 3000+ rpm to bore precision holes in glass.. the slower rpm's 2000- would always break the workpiece..
seems like it pops and cracks into bigger chunks and pieces at low rpm..

What do you mean by "chewing?" Glass is harness of 5, regular drill bit is 6+
whats the problem? Seems like a waste of money to buy an expensive special bit.

Some drill bits have teeth that chew or chip away small pieces of material to cut through. The bigger the dust created by the bit is from a bigger the gap and depth of the cutting edges of the teeth.
The more brittle the the material the finer the cut you want so you don't crack it.
Glass being very brittle needs a really fine cutting edge.
A bit that grinds it with a diamond tip is about as fine as you can get in a do it yourself situation.
And grinding bits and sand paper all have their own measurement of grit.

Regular bits will chip/crack glass.
bits like this are actually the best for drilling glass.

they dont slide aroound or anything.

I'm skeptical but ok.
I bet I could do it with regular bits.

Probably, after destroying a few bits and breaking some glass.

shins i think your missing the small fact that regular drill bits dont have the starting point as the above pics..
with a regular drill bit just to get started you would have to apply a firm amount of pressure to get it to work. and by that time.. the glass is cracked.
