wa cyan id?
    #19047530 - 10/28/13 05:46 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, could someone please help id two different sites of possible cyans? Thanks!

Site #1:

Habitat:
Growing in the bushes in a park on some woodchips and dirt

Gills:
Light tan, attached

Stem:
Whitish with some bruising. A little bit less than the width of a pencil

Cap:
About the size of a quarter. Distinct bluing around the edges. Several more mature were wavy but most looked young and attached to the stem or flat with a dimple.

Spore print color:
Light purple. Will get a picture up soon. The one I took I didn't let sit long enough though.

Bruising:
Blue bruising around the ring of the cap and on some stems.

Other information:
Pretty sure they are cyans but most are young so harder to tell. Will go back to take picture of matures ones once they develop.

Site # 2

Habitat: Right on the side of a road in woodchips.

Gills: Darker brown, attached.

Stem: Darker white/tan

Cap: Light brown, almost a greyish gold.

Bruising: Very slight blue/greenish bruising on certain parts of caps or stems. Not present on all them and super small.

Other: A bit more unsure on this patch. The shape looks right and the colors are close but not for sure. The patch is pretty dry which may be the reason they look a little off? Trying to take a spore print but might be too dry for one. Will post later if it works.

They look like cyanescens to me, check for bluing and a purple spore print.

No 2 is cyans

No 1... Thought maybe stuntzii but you could be right, just young cyans... Bit dry ... Expect more blue from cyans

Make sure each one bruises blue, purplish spore print

All the ones i've been finding have been very, very dry and look just like that. Ive even had to grab lil ones cause they were dead anyway and make room.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the input. I only took one spore print from the first patch and am currently trying to print all of them from the second but am not very confident they will drop. Would dry pictures help at all of the first patch? Also is bruising less likely to happen if they are already semi dry? Thanks.

Sometimes a couple drops of water on the cap helps instigate sporeing. And the drier/older they are the less they drop.

I found some P. stuntzii this year which bruised pretty good, but they were the variation which is unmistakable so lol....I guess that doesn't matter lolol.

All those freshies growing in the first pic below are Ps. cyanescens.

In the second photo you can see where the spores of the more mature mushrooms fell onto the caps of the younger mushrooms growing below them (i.e. a natural spore print): dark purple.

Thanks! I saw those spore prints on top of the other ones but hard to tell if they are purple or not. I'm pretty confident in both patches but this is my first year hunting and better safe then sorry. Struck out for 3 or 4 weeks straight and then have been finding a spot at every place I've looked these last few times!
