money for the war on terror
    #1902454 - 09/10/03 02:28 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Alright, forget about the justification for the war. It happened and we are in the thick of it. Who has a problem with the money Bush is asking for and why?

the money isn't for the war on terror. it's for "rebuilding" iraq.

No true. Part of it is for rebuilding Iraq. Most of the rest of it is to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I say give it to him. The more they have to spend and the more fucked up the situation gets in Iraq, the less likely they are to go blundering into Iran.

If Iraq had worked out they'd be massing on the Iranian border by now.

Any money for re-building Iraq should come directly out of the fortunes of Bush, Cheney and any others who are profiting from U.S. business dealings there. To go deeper in debt means future tax increases or monetary inflation to pay off the debt and is irresponsible. Why should the beleaguered working men and women of America be further punished for the benefit of large corporate interests and the Israeli lobby?

Great idea. That's probably the only thing that would make them think twice before invading somewhere.

"10,000 dead civilians - nah, lets invade...I lose my seventh mansion and that lovely outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi? Whoah, lets think about this again...."

I hope the large majority of it goes to rebuilding Iraq, for some reason im not comfortable with spending vast amounts of money blowing things up then spending vast amounts of money rebuilding them.....

Seems a little inefficient

The thing you are missing here is the vast amounts of money for rebuilding are not only to repair damage the coalition has inflicted. It is for repairing the years of neglected infrastructure in the country.

Thanks to 12 years of a medieval sanctions policy.

Well you brought it up shak. It has nothing to do with "neglecting infrastructure". Indeed Saddam was renowned for improving infrastructure in early Iraq.

A war, thousands of bombing raids and sanctions for 12 years will certainly affect infrastructure.

Those sanction really hurt the way Saddam was living. The money he was spending on gold door knobs should have been used to help his people. Don't blame the sanctions for the state that Iraq is in. Saddam was steadily building new mansions while the sanctions were in place.

Now as far as more money to rebuild Iraq, guess where I think it should come from. It's time to start auctioning off gold door knobs.

A lot of the money will be reimbursed by oil profits most likely. Not enough to make the war profitable of course, but the Iraqis are going to have to pay for a lot of the rebuilding.

Not enough to make the war profitable of course,

Profitable for the average american? Of course not. Profitable for major corporations? You bet.

My point is that the sanctions only indirectly affected the infrastructure of the country. Saddam choose to neglect the infrastructure of his county and instead spent state funds on himself. Why? Because the sanctions no long allowed Saddam to spend as he pleased on himself and still have some left to grace his people with. Of course he built up the infrastructure in the beginning. When you are a new leader you must please the masses until you have such complete control that they are no longer a concern.

So what on earth was the point of the sanctions if they all they did was kill well over a million ordinary Iraqi's while Saddam remained in luxury?
