Contaminated cakes?
    #19047967 - 10/28/13 06:54 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi. I've got 4 cakes right now that are questionable. Three have a fuzzy blue mold? and one has fuzzy blue and now green as well. The green one has already been removed. All 4 are on the second flush and ready for a 3rd dunk if they are still ok. Almost all the cakes have the fuzzy white stuff from poor FAE as I understand, so that could account for the fuzziness and the blue might just be bruising. What do you guys think?

Should I dunk and roll them again or toss em. I tossed one already a few days ago and have 7 more that seem fine. The blue ones have been producing too, though not as much as the others except for one that had a huge shroom.

1.

2.

3.

4.

Is it at all better/more promising that the blueing didn't start until after they fruited?

The blue actually appears to be bruising though there's definitely Trich on at least 2 of those.

1 has it for sure I think. I tossed that one already a couple hours ago. Which other one did you think has it as well?

This one. All that growth around your thumb looks like Trich mycelium and if you look down a bit you can see some of the green powdery spores forming.

Which by the way I should mention... about the worst thing you could do with a contaminated cake is touch it. Not that the brief contact is likely to be harmful to you but when your touching your healthy cakes afterwards you'll still mold spores and mold fragments on your hand and can spread it.

Good eye. Just checked and definitely some green on the bottom as well. Tossed it. I know I shouldn't be handling them as much as I do. I wash my hands before and after and try not to touch any caked I think are ok after touching a possibly bad one. Still not the best practice.
