Skating is half of my living, and this thread just made it a little harder for me to live.
An ollie is something you can only do on a skateboard. If it's on a bike, it's a bunny hop. If it's on a ripstick, it's definitely not an ollie.
And no amount of tricks on a ripstick will ever make up for the fact that you are, and I quote,

I like to swivel my hips. And if it's not called an ollie on a ripstik then what is it called? Same motions, same result… it's an ollie. Regardless when I say ollie on a ripstik you know what i mean

most people learn how to ollie standing still on a skateboard.. or adding another level and weight when your trying to do it while moving on a hip swivel..
get on a skateboard.. learn to do it without movement.. progress from there.

I always recommend to try ollies while moving as early as possible. you don't want to get too used to stationary ollies IMO

Thanks guys.
If I'm gonna get a skateboard I want a good one not a cheap $15 target one that hardly rolls.
Any suggestions?

Just go to a skate shop and build a custom deck or ask them to help you build one. when I last built one a complete board would cost about 75-150
Ollie is the easiest trick. To start, wedge two of your wheels between the crack of a sidewalk, and use that to hold stationary while you practice.
The positioning of your feet is important. You want your rear leg on the tip of the tail and your leading leg somewhere around the middle of the board or even closer to the tail, because you are going to be sliding that leg UP to the front of the board. I sometimes found it helpful to only use like the tips of the foot, get more leverage that way.. especially once you start to advance to kickflips and whatnot.
It's basically two motions done as one 1. ~Pop~ rear foot on the tail down hard, so that the board flies upward on the two back wheels (you want the leading leg to be "loose" or fly up with the board) 2. At the same time, or as soon as it pops.. JUMP into the air using your rear leg to launch, and while doing that ~drag~ your leading foot UP the board to level it out as you are jumping into the air Done right the board should go parallel and follow right under your feet. Just one fluid motion
Once you get the motion down, then you can do it while you are moving. But learn the technique first, while stationary. Practice on carpet.

Man ripsticks arent for tricks, u can but itll be way harder to learn on than a regular board. And ollie is probably the hardest trick to learn cuz when ur learning it your still getting comfortable on the board. Do a rainbow with your feet and jump! Peace

Try a deck with no wheels or trucks on a piece of carpet. I used to be able to heel/kickflip a bare deck.

Ya that's true, you should be able to ollie or flip a plain deck with no trucks or wheels, same principle works on carpet for learning the technique

Cheap starterboard would be the Mike Magill boards that dis. Through wally world. I thought it was going to suck, but its the best for a beginer, 35$. It rolls fine good pop, just a lil heavy but its by far what I reck, skated al my life.
