I live in the California central Valley and I fucking hate it here, so many gangs and bad people, it's ugly here..
I was wondering what part of the United States is chill and more layed back, with less gangs?

Need more criteria than that, what else are you looking for? Urban, rural, suburban? Conservative, liberal? Public transportation, wide open spaces? Cost of living?

I fell ya man, the valley is pretty lame ....
You don't have to go far to find a chill and laid back place though, you just have to get out of the valley . There are some chill communities up in the foothills & mountains. The north coast is chill and beautiful. The central coast is laid back.
I actually wouldn't mind the valley as much if I lived a bit more outside of town, if I had a little bit of land out in the cuts, just residing in these mundane valley towns really gets to me. The one aspect I dig about the valley is that it's centralized. It's close to everything, the bay/coast is an hour one way, the mountains an hour the other way. With a short drive, one can go snowboarding & wakeboarding in the same day, then surfing the next day, and you can do all three damn near any time of the year (except the 4.5 months that there's no snow) . And there are a lot of gatherings/festivals in the general area during spring & summer, more than anywhere else in the nation as far as I know.
But as far as nightly entertainment, art shows, music, and things like that. Things to do in the vicinity, not much in the valley.....And the mentality, general disposition, and vibe of this place makes it pretty miserable sometimes. I want out, this place is a trap.

Arizona is pretty chill actually. We got mill and old town if you wanna get crazy and glendale/peoria/cave creek are nice suburban areas if your trying to just get a cheap house and chill. We also got medical marijuana now and you can join the native american church here to legally grow peyote. Flagstaff is really chill as well as most small towns in Az. Arizona is really strict on DUI so if your prone to do that shit don't move here..oh yeah can carry concealed weapons too if that spikes your interest..
Colorado is dope Washington... except idk about the rain (heard it makes people suicidal as fuck)
Then there is Miramar Florida, which is incredibly beautiful place..hurricanes though..
hmmmm.. I love Cali though. Me and all my friends are always driving to Cali to sip lean and smoke bomb trees.

People may not realize it, but most states in the south are really laid back, at least I know it is NE Georgia. People will go out of their way just to help you. No one looks at you weird when you are nice to them either.

Gorlax, if he trained at Ft. Benning I can totally see that, but that is south Georgia. North Georgia is much more preferential, especially north of the ATL. I really enjoyed being out in Oregon too. Pretty peaceful.

I would say my state, New Mexico. It's not on top of the financial chain but it's pretty quiet here. The gangs here are teenage wannabes that don't really do a damn thing. You get nice weather, beautiful sunsets, and amazing rocky desert landscapes!

I've heard that Montana(think it was Montana) is one of the best kept secrets in terms of wealth, jobs(in certain industries I'm guessing, certainly to a lesser extent as far as the industry i'm in) low cost of living, beautiful scenery.
And yah, technically I live in what I consider the tri-state area, but I'm not sure if that's the same one Rackem was referring to. It's smack dab in the middle of the bos-washington corridor and a very highly populated part of the country, I dig it and you find people from all walks of life and you've got access to great culture and blah blah blah, but I wouldn't necessarily call the area laid back. There's good people, good infrastructure in terms of public transportation and networking between the major cities - and very pretty scenery, but in a much "quainter" rolling hills kinda way compared to west coast scenery - we also have all the cons of higher population densities. Also the weed out here is way more expensive.

california is fucked.. only way to afford it down here is to work for the government.
and right now 7 out of 10 people do just that or get payment from the government in one form or another.

I was just refuting your claim that you have to work at the government to make it in Cali. There are several lucrative industries based largely in California. I'm definitely planning on moving to Cali in the next few years, looking forward to the beautiful weather all year round!

This is gonna sound odd but out of the 20 states I have lived in Arkansas was by far tyhe greatest. I was 10 minutes from lil rock and it was epic. Bar crawl down main street every friday and Saturday night or head out to the wilderness 5 minutes the otherway. Chil as fuck females that are hot but not stuck up, low taxes, no vehicles inspection. Land is cheap (2200 an acre) and good jobs in lr or at the afb close by. Been trying to get back since I left. Still vist every year and have a wild ass time.

I'd say New Mexico. I can speak for NM, AZ, and CA. AZ is last. California is where it's at, but when you get tired of that move to northern New Mexico. Beautiful nature and not too many fucked up laws like AZ.
Never had a problem scoring drugs in any of the places but the quality was the best in AZ for everything except weed. CA for weed. Careful of Arizona drug laws.

Oregon,
Went there for 2 weeks and it was the most relaxed and content I have been in my entire life. Feels like life moves at a different pace up there. Can't wait til I find my self waking up in that state on the daily!

Depends on which tristate area.
If we're talking about the northeast. ..well, like I said, I would not call it laid back, but that doesn't mean everyone up here is an asshole with a funky accent, far from it.
The good thing is that it's very diverse, it's got a shit ton of people, and thus, you meet people from all walks of life and there's a little something for everyone in a highly accessible area. Of course there are an everlasting abundance of drugs due to the demand of a heavy population, but the attitude towards something a simple as weed out here is totally different.
I have lived in the NE my entire life, in both the boondocks and big city - the more liberal and open minded an area is(which I'm guessing is what the op wants), the faster it moves and the closer it is to a large city. I mean, there are some kickass little artist colonies and smaller cities(New Hope, PA and Burlington, VT come to mind..but i guess VT is more New England) that are pretty darn chilled out.
Personally, I think there are good folks and assholes everywhere. I get wanting to find a place with a different 'scene', but if you are looking for a slower pace of life with cheap weed and relatively lax law enforcement towards it....yeah...tristate area is a no go by that criteria alone. Also that's quite a move for you if you have never been out this way and don't really know if you like it. I would suggest migrating up the left coast and looking in the previously suggested PNW, that's what i'd do if I were you!

How has no one mentioned Vermont yet? Chillest state on the east coast. Excellent microbrews, a dank local food movement, tons of beautiful hiking spots, great skiing...

The south is extremely chill, but I don't think you'd make it.
I'm not saying that to be a dick, but southerners are extremely xenophobic. Though you may not be a Yankee, you're from California

I just moved from California to the south. People seem accepting although I never mention where I'm from unless they ask. It seems like people glamorize "Cali" here in the south. At least where I'm at.
Also, can confirm. People are very friendly and laid back in the small towns.

Your perception of your surroundings is a direct reflection of your own self image.

Well, I know California has a lot of different towns that are real laid back, like for example in Humbolt County with the weed growers.
Also, if you want laid back, any on-the-beach towns on the Cali shore is for sure laid back. I mean, you live on the beach dude! Just stay away from the big cities. Smaller is better for laid back, as you know....
I heard Santa Cruz is pretty cruisy....
Also, Downtown San Fran is laid back, I mean that's where the famous LSD movement started. What was the streets Hait and Ashberry or something...
But if you like smoking weed, Humbolt county is the way to go. Its also Squatch country up there too! If you see you, take some video for us! I wanna see him/her!
