This would be my first matsutake find but not my first Catathelasma find. I cant tell if the gills are decurrent because it is so young.
Elevation - 100 - 200 feet growing in conifer forest on coast of oregon smell: mild smell when whole smell of cucumbers after bisection
pics

found a nice little haul of yellow foots while i was out.

I don't think its a matsutake bud. Sorry.
They definitely do not smell like cucumbers.

That is an uncommon find on this side of the country right?
The Catathelasma I mean.

What do they smell like? My last Catathelasma smelled like a really strong button mushroom, different than these ones. These smell very mild and hard to describe.
Now that the cut isnt fresh i dont smell much of anything on them now
Its probably Catathelasma, can matsutake even grow at low elevations?

I'd call it a Catathelasma sp. C. ventricosum given the greyish pileus and mild odor.
Nice grab-bag of chants though!

People find them locally at around 300ft elevation under Madrone here.

Im pretty sure that matsutake can grow at low elevation.
M. Kuo describes it as slightly unpleasant.
I have never smelled it before.
The matsutake is certainly very spicy in aroma. They smell like a cinnimon candy and socks just like Arora says.

I'd guess all the way down to sea level, folks keep telling me the dunes here are full of them...
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

I wonder sometimes if some less experienced people eat these catathelasma thinking they are matsu on the coast sometimes. I cant find much information on there edibility but they smell decent. Maybe i will sample a small amount.
Probably only because i keep finding them though and they almost trick me.. last time it was easier because i could see the decurrent gills unlike this one.

Not me. That thing just does not look like a matsi. Last winter I just decided I was gonna find some, went out and did it. There was no doubt in my mind about what I'd found once I found it.
The brown scaling on the stipe is quite diatinctive and once you've gotten the smell...
I heard a guy ask one of the mushroom buyers if he bought cats, the answer was no. But I think that speaks to edibility... Seems to me that when I did my research on 'em they were edible, but not choice.

Locals in Bandon Oregon area say they find them as close to the ocean as just beyond the dunes where the trees start. Never made it out there to check that out myself.

If they are found on the coast in the north and south than they should be on the coast in the middle where I am at. Ill keep searching and ill find some eventually.

Yes Catathelasma is edible. The very toxic lookalike is Amanita smithii. It even smells like Matsutake.
Matsutake grows all the way down to sea level, and up in the mountains as well.
