My Ranco just shit the bed
    #19046096 - 10/28/13 01:23 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Any body ever have this happen to their ranco before?

I am really bummed out. I was right in the middle of a straw pasteurizing process.

I have it hooked up to a 120v water heating element that is in the bottom
of a 55gal drum I use to pasteurize straw.

I have used it 3 other times for this process without trouble.

It did get hot though.

I know nothing about electronics.

Any help would be appreciated.

Going to go read about amps volts and watts now.

So... you were running 250-277v into a 120v heating element? That might give you a clue as to what happened

No. The ranco is 120v as well.

How many watts is your heater? As I can see maximum permissible current on your device is 16A, and voltage 110V AC .The equation is as follows: (A * V = W) 16*110 = 1760 watts maximum permissible load. I assume that your heater is more than 1760 watts. Аnd that is the reason accident occurred.
(Second reason may be the only weak contacts. Places where you attach the wires to be strongly tightened with a screwdriver. But certainly do not think that's your problem.)
If you want to ask me something else about electricity, I'd be glad to help you.

You know, you might be right. It is all covered in silicon right now.

I thought I remembered it being 1000w. Ill have to tear it apart to find out.

The heating element is 1500w. But I did have a mini fridge plugged in as well.

That is probably where I went wrong.

Thank you so much snakebite.

Haha, ok. Thanks for that.

I am going to just re-purchase a new Ranco 111000-000. Unless you say otherwise.

But this time I will not plug anything else into it.

Why do you need thermal regulator to pasteurized straw?
I have 2 55gal drums with the 6000 watt heaters without thermostat, only with suitable switch ON OFF.
Тo pasteurized straw do not need the expensive thermal regulator, in a pinch you can use a cheep boiler thermostat.

The reason....

Well, when you are growing mushrooms, as you well know, there are a million
ways to do anything. After a bit of research I found the ranco controller.

It seemed to fit my needs. And I could also use it for temp control for
brewing my beers.

And besides that, it works! It works well if I do not overload it.

Ill look into what that backer thing you posted.

Thanks so much snakebite. You are a smart man.
