Well keep in mind my brother has used some drugs in his day. He has used mushrooms and weed and probably a few other things , so he is not totally drug naive.

Fair enough.  I haven't seen the letter he wrote to you anyways so I'm having to imagine some of the details.

i think that while there are many useful and interesting insights that can be gained from the psychedelic experience, people tend to wrap their drug usage up in language that makes it out more than what it is. first and foremost, i like to get high because it's fun. i don't ever take drugs and think to myself "i'm going to try to have a mystical experience that will allow me to improve myself". roll the dice, have fun, and if you get a glimpse of the empyrean then good on you.

That's exactly what I used to think every time before I tripped. Let me bask in the pure light of constructive self awareness. How can psychedelic experiences be less than the words we use to describe them. You have it ass backwards, it's just that every person inevitable comes across as an asshole when trying to make someone else realize the truth of this experience. Just be tactful, don't be a pretentious asshole, and respect the experience.

i am respectful of the experience. it's people's attitudes i'm critical of. to me those people are trying way too hard and come off as pretentious. not that it effects me, but that is my opinion.

I think the attitude towards the substance is fine for the enthusiasts, but it's generally askew towards non-users.

Do you think the avoidance by non-enthusiasts of rampant psychotropic intake is anything like your displayed act of avoiding my question about your alcohol intake, whilst readily commenting on latter remarks? Food for thought. :smirk:

My reply wasn't to you and wouldn't make any sense if it were, and your comment about the unpalatable nature of condescending spiritual fluff only agrees with what I said one post prior, so don't be sorry for anything other than being easily confused.

Okay. Millzy, I am speaking to you now and this is not a burn. I would just like to point out that my last post about the split-second decision to ignore or attend to a question critical of an aspect of drug usage, which may be similar to the split-second decision made by those who totally abstain in the midst of discussion, was directed to Moonshoe. And it was also not a burn. That is all.

I'm going to sleep. Have a good night / sleep.

What was your question? Why i drink beer and not hard alcohol?

I just find that drinking beer naturally paces (slows down) my alcohol consumption, I just sip a beer, enjoying the flavor, the alcohol content is low and  I drink it slowly, as  a result when I stick to beer only I avoid hangovers, puking, black outs etc, while when I take shots or something I always regret it and end up sick (more likely to end up sick if I drink hard liquor, If I stick to beer its always fine for me personally).

Agreed. There seems to be an alarming amount of people who for some reason, believe drugs (especially tryptamines) are a gateway to other dimensions, or that they will somehow aid in reaching spiritual enlightenment.Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I think it just stems from a fear of death, and what comes after (or doesn't).  Everything you perceive during a trip is a fabrication of your mind, consisting of thoughts, memories, knowledge, and beliefs, conscious and sub-conscious. This doesn't lessen the importance of them, however. They allow us to change our perceptions and approach problems and situations in ways that aren't possible without them.

TL;DR

drugs are not magical, but they are still useful

Uh, yeah, that makes perfect sense and didn't really require an explanation. I drank too much beer last night and thought I would be contentious.

belief systems are only as useful as the results they produce. i think it's fine for people to believe whatever they want about the experience. and if those beliefs lead anyone to self improvement then that's awesome. as for my own personal beliefs, i am hesitant to reduce the experience to it being solely a product of my mind because we know so little about the mind. spreading beliefs as facts is pernicious regardless of which camp you belong to regarding this issue. my own experience has caused me to pitch my tent in the "i don't know" area of the park.

to be clear, i was referring to certain attitudes towards usage and not beliefs about the experience itself. i find it unnecessary to treat usage as if it's liturgical in most cases. that isn't to say that i disapprove of ayahuasca churches/ceremonies or incorporating psychedelics into magick. i'm mainly referring to hippies who are so far gone in the vortex of memes that their insular world produces that they can't see that all they're doing is going out of their minds like the rest of us.

Although this is obvious from my OP, I do believe that " drugs (especially tryptamines) are a gateway to other dimensions, or that they will somehow aid in reaching spiritual enlightenment."

Keep in mind that this belief is the oldest religious/spiritual belief in history, and was held universally by all indigenous peoples and tribes, all of whom practiced visionary shamanism and all of whom believed psychedelics were a gateway to other realms and spiritual entities. The belief that this is not the case is an extremely recent idea. Every human society originated with psychedelic shamanism.

I believe psychedelics and dissociative are tools for spiritual growth and enlightenment if used wisely and with intent, however, they will never work fully unless A. you are completely dedicated to a legitimate shamanic path under the tutelage of a sincere initiated shaman and B. You supplement your psychedelic shamanism with other techniques such as meditation, chanting, yoga, conscious breathing, exercise and C. you stay on top of your real world responsibilities like work, exercise, relationships, money, chores etc.

Sounds like 'enlightenment' is another religion. What makes it better than a different one?
