Possible Gym Find

Habitat: I found these specimens growing on a wet stump in a city park. I think it was a birch tree. This was the only stump in the area which received sufficient water for fungal growth, a Goldilocks zone. Found where moist growing near the base.
Gills: Adnate, chocolate-brown to rust to orange, and crowded.
Stem: 38mm long, 5mm thick, solid, slight umbo. All specimens are dry, so refer to pics for color and other characteristics!
Cap: 60mm wide, yellow-orange drying orange-brown, convex, with slightly incurved margin. Surface cracked and mottled when dry. Flesh underneath is yellow, like in the fresh specimens (not pictured).
Spore print color: Very orange/amber color.
Bruising: I didn't notice any bruising, but the specimens are dry.
Other information: It smelled like oranges, not sure if this could be described as anise-like with maturity. Taste is very bitter with fruity notes. I think these are gyms, but here's a few pics. Sorry again for the usual poor quality! Hopefully this is enough data for an ID. My guide book narrowed down the ID based on the spore print to gymnopilus because others with the same spore print either did not grow on the same media, or did not meet the description of these specimens.

Looks like some very rotten mushrooms. Bacteria like that can make you very ill.

@Maynard, are you sure they're rotten? I'm really looking for an ID so I maybe could cultivate these for later on.

This. Even if it was a Gymnopilus (which I'm not sure of) it would not be fit for consumption. Watch that spot for some fresh specimens.

I redistributed some of the less-fit specimens by ripping them apart and returning them to spots with moist substrate, definitely my intention to return. Though that is a little upsetting. They don't seem to be rotten, just a little dry! How can you tell from the pics?

Definitely an orange spore print, and also, I saw one specimen that did have bacterial contamination which didn't look anything like these. They were still growing when picked, so I doubt this is bacteria. I'm pretty sure this is just how it looks after having been dried out. :o

I will re-culture them for next season! Survey says they're gyms, I'll go with my gut on this one and put a little effort into this.

I am no gymnopilus expert fer sure but with older specimens like that they might be hard to get a 100% ID on. If u have a microscope u can look at the spore prints and see if the spores are almond shaped with warts on them

I'll create a suitable outdoor zone and colonize it, anyhow. I may have access to microscopy equipment in the future, but not currently. I'll just cross my fingers and hope something grows at a later point in time. :P
