I envy a lot of what she does, too. However, she's not exactly great as holding tempo. There's no pulse, much less a groove. And it's not like she's abandoning that in the interest of phrasing/melody.

Her style is so unique though. Not many players can play like that.
If you listen to more of her music it's not really about keeping the tempo, she is very unique and exquisite IMO. Her songs seem to be more based on the talent.
Kinda like math rock or other types like that. The tempo is usually never the same throughout the entire song
I really like it though very different but cool

She played the piece to specifications. It's your ear that has the misqueue'd expectations

Which specifications are those?
At points she's slapping the strings on the 2 and 4, 'keeping' the beat in the most ham-fisted way possible, yet there's still no sense of pulse or groove. She's all over the beat, never locked in.
Like I said, a lot of what she does is enviable. I wish I could play guitar. The sense of rhythm in her playing is not enviable, imo, and I don't understand why she has a video with such elaborate production.

She's playing an ovation, too. Ovations are shit.
I like how you can't even make one little valid criticism without people jumping down your throat. She DOES have somewhat shoddy timekeeping. It's still a nice piece but you're absolutely right.
But of course you're not allowed to have any negative opinions without also being a guitar master yourself!

This is a dude I know from my old neighborhood and broader social circles.
He locks in to a groove, even when the tempo is fluid (the two aren't mutually exclusive). When a guitarist slaps the strings for percussive effect, a sense of tempo is a perfectly reasonable expectation. This guy does speed up a bit in the course of his piece, but there's always a pulse (even if it's accelerating).
Moreover, Horrigan's phrasing is much more dynamic and expressive. Thus, he would have more of an alibi for moving away from a solid groove. (But he does not.)
Now like I've said, I'm not a guitarist. I don't even play music anymore. The piece Horrigan is playing might not be as demanding as the girl's. I'm unable to judge that point. But I do think his playing displays all-around better musicianship.
That's all -- my $0.02. I'm not hating. And, as I've said, I envy the girl as well. I wish I could play like she does. But I'd rather play like Kevin Horrigan.

You don't have to be better than someone to have a criticism than them. I really dislike when people say something like this instead of actually addressing the criticism. By the same logic you also could not praise someone for being good at something unless you were better than them.

There's a difference between having a changing meter and not playing in tempo.
Personally I've never really dug Kaki King, but she's certainly not bad.
