A new one on me.

I've been hunting and studying local mushrooms for 38 years and never run across this one. Not in any of the books I have incl. Mushrooms Demystified. But this is an extraordinary year.
Habitat: pasture, mid vancouver island,(49.6733° N deg N), BC Canada, sea level, on moss/perhaps old rotted wood under, open area, horses in adjacent pasture.
Large group but not clustered.
Gills: White, slightly down the stem, close, white spores, narrow crowded.
Stem: Length 3", diameter 1" top, obvious bulb, no cup, white, texture dry, no remnants, firm, solid, fibrous, (not breaking cleanly.)
Cap: 3 to 8", color buff like light hamburger bun, texture like quality leather/chamois but not cracked, rounded with in-rolled margin with young (like Bluet) and convex in older(like the prince),never concave. Firm texture, fibrous like stem, not crisp. "normal" pleasant smell. Again, the group looks like 1/2 hamburger buns. They are drying out at room temperature rather than melting.
Spore print color: White
Bruising: no bruising.
No bugs on any of them. Tiny taste of cap is slightly sweet.

Thanks for the idea James it does share several characteristics. But not nailed by the MD at least. It appears related to several aspects of tricholoma as well. EG the Bitter Brown but it's sweet not bitter and gills do not go brown or stain. Also similar to the Poplar tric. in location and other aspects but again no staining.

This is the closer for sure -Leucopaxillus albissimus seems very close. Now to decide how to test it for edibility. Maybe I'll try it on the neighbors dog.

I take it you don't like your neighbors dog much?
I agree Leucopaxillus albissimus looks likely. Also consider Leucopaxillus albiformis if only because its more common in your area. Excellent ID request by the way! Welcome to the Shroomery.

Thanks. The site seems pretty good Just kidding about the dog of course and they don't even have a dog. I am very tempted to sample tho.(maybe it's my wifes turn.I took the last chance) Most say it is not (deadly) poisonous but likely bitter which seems unlikely in this one if the nibble test is indicative. http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Leucopaxillus_albissimus.html I'll let you know.. if I can.

I figured as much.
Happy hunting!
Edit: To my knowledge no species of Leucopaxillus are known to be poisonous. But none are known for their edibility either.

I concur. smelly when cooking and insipid taste. Such a shame they are such keepers and so firm. Need to be bred. I'll call Monsanto about it. JK
