Life is soooo boring sober

I'm 20 years old and have been smoking marijuana on a daily basis since the sixth grade (since I was 12). It hasn't impacted my life too negatively per say- I'm studying Chemistry at university and doing pretty well, I still have a good social circle, and I've been able to maintain an excellent relationship with my family. But my god, I find it damn near impossible to enjoy myself sober. Watching TV shows, riding my bike or long-board, listening to music, eating delicious meals, snowboarding, having sex, playing video games, and going to parties are all activities that give me 0 satisfaction and enjoyment unless I am high. When I run out of weed and am left to my own devices, I literally just sit on the couch and stare off into blank space for the entire time because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, appears so dull, plain, and flat out boring. It isn't until I have a few tokes that I can finally put enjoyment into my day and whatever I choose to do. It just baffles me because I look at people at my university and overhear their conversations and they seem to have so much fun from doing regular shit sober. This begins to make me wonder- Am I like this because weed has fried my pleasure circuit (akin to heroin) or is it because I've been exposed to what true pleasure is and am constantly comparing that to sobriety? To me, marijuana is an incredible enhancer of all the senses and I love how it can turn a plain butter bagel into a delicacy that was crafted by the all loving God himself in his own furnace. It's beautiful. Or how it can turn a shitty song that I've heard 1000 times into a symphony of vibrant, euphoric sounds.
Is this a regular part of smoking weed? I also do MDMA once a month because the rush is incredible and to be honest, there's very few things that compare to the bliss, euphoria, and body high that it provides.
tl;dr - if drugs didn't exist, I feel like my life would be super duper dull. Anyone else feel the same way?

If you take a long enough break, you'll start to feel how awesome being sober can be. Might be a little more challenging for you since you didn't get the practice your brain needed when it was going through major development, but it will just take time.

When THC enters the brain, there is a rush of dopamine. If you smoke daily, like I do, you are taking the helm of your body's dopamine release. Under normal circumstances, a sober mind releases different levels of serotonin or dopamine (as well as many other neurotransmitters) depending on the excitement level, etc. So by taking control of this release, it almost causes your body to "turn off" its natural releases because there is already so much dopamine hanging around the synapse. I can really relate to how you feel, and I have a shitty day when I don't get to smoke or run out of weed. You just have to make yourself go out for a run or something to release neurotransmitters your brain isn't really "used" to, or to get a little dopamine going (aka "runner's high"... it does exist!). Your brain isn't broken either... Lol. In three days of no smoking, your brain's neurotransmitter levels are all back to square, and your body will begin to release just as much dopamine when you have sex. It might not be the same sex as when your dopamine levels are heightened from weed, but its going to be 100x better then "sex with no weed," or that "bagel without weed." Just gotta remember your brain is a delicate device, and it pays to respect its normal sober state. I agree 100% that weed can enhance everything, but you will live a much happier life and be able to bring joy to others' too if you can find ways to be as happy as those "other folks" who can basically get the same rise we get out of smelling fresh dank nugs out of talking about some stupid TV show.

Sounds familiar. I started when I was 12 and ended up a full-time stoner. When I quit about five years ago it took a while to get pleasure again from normal life. If that's the way you want to live (stoned all day), then go for it, there are millions of functional potheads and you'll probably be fine. But if you were to quit and be sober for 6 months or so, I would bet that you'd begin to be able to enjoy things without weed and you'd suddenly realize that you've been running around with a lead apron on, you'd have more energy to do fun shit and would in general enjoy life more. Not to mention you'd have money to do a lot of other things.
Weed is not physically addictive, but it does have a subtle way of taking over your entire life and quietly hindering everything you do. You can function smoking like that, but if you were to quit and go through the unpleasant detox period, you might find yourself doing more than functioning and actually thriving. After about 4 years of no weed, I went back and starting smoking a bowl now and then, though I smoke much less and now I don't do it more than once a week. I find I can enjoy the weed more this way as well as enjoy life in between. Doing any drug all day every day of your life is hard on the body and a sure sign of dependence. I say detox for a few years then revisit the weed with some clarity and perspective, see if it's everything you thought it was before, or if maybe you've been hiding from something all this time. Chances are, with some perspective you'll see it isn't all that you thought it was, and that maybe you're a better person for having laid off it. Maybe you'll say, "hey that sucked, I'm going to go back to smoking weed everyday" but at least at that point you'll know for certain and be making an informed and intelligent lifestyle choice.

Well what do you think is gonna happen when you use a drug on a daily basis that makes you feel good? Obviously sober life is going to be decreased because your biochemistry is out of wack. Hashfinger explains this pretty well.
I bet you wouldn't feel the same way if you stopped for a few months. You'd barely remember why you had to smoke weed to get pleasure out of daily things - and of course its awesome and it will enhance it, but abusing weed makes life kinda boring when you aren't high and when you HAVE to be high to enjoy life... you know SOMETHING is wrong...
Abusing drugs has its consequences, its just easier to abuse weed than most drugs

Your goals change slowly once you get used to sober neurotransmitter levels unless you wanna go back to smoking which will be your only goal hence the cycle.

I think you answered your own question bud!
"because I've been exposed to what true pleasure is and am constantly comparing that to sobriety"
People who have never smoked marijuana have no idea how enjoyable it is to eat your favorite meal high, to make love baked, or to listen to your favorite beats stoned! Thus they can't contrast it with anything so they naturally assume that sobriety is the highest form of pleasure because that is all they've ever experienced!
Analogy: All your life, the only gaming console you have ever known is a Super Nintendo and you love it! This is what everyone plays. You've never seen anything better! One day your friend from down the street introduces you to his playstation 4. You come home and feel depressed. Every time you turn on your SNES, you can't help but think how much better the PS4 is. This is exactly how the sober vs stoned thing works! Every time you eat, fcuk, bike, or listen to music, you are naturally thinking how much better it would be to do the same activity high. And sorry to say the truth, but anything high is 100x better!

Disagree. Yeah senses are enhanced, but cognition is clouded, and that carries it's own pleasure when sober.

Meh. Maybe I'm weird but every time I smoke weed, just sitting down and philosophizing (especially with friends) becomes one of life's finest pleasures. I've honestly gone to bars high with some buddies where we would sit and have deep conversations about life, love, meaning, and so forth. Weed makes me think creatively and analytically and has even helped me understand key concepts in school.
I may feel a little cloudy the next day when I wake up but it's not to the point of making me impaired in anyway. I don't have trouble remembering phone numbers, taking information in, and so forth.
I think 8 years of smoking, especially from such a young age, has made my brain develop differently. Believe me people, I've tried taking breaks (managed to pull off a 1.5 month t-break) but by the first week, all I could think about was how good that joint would feel and how hard it would hit. And it hit quite harddd :P
I'm not depressed by any means, I'm beyond happy to be alive and I absolutely love life. I've had such beautiful and joyful moments and I wouldn't trade them for a thing in the world. But maybe the sober lens just isn't my style of life.

alcohol and weed make some people paranoid about what other people are thinking about them. basically, it diminishes their ego. instead of trying to put themselves out there to entertain others, they just sit there paranoid about how stupid they might sound if they say the wrong thing.
a lot of people are just waiting to take a shit every day, waiting to get paid, or waiting to get laid. basically, a lot of waiting. but they get anticipatorillly excited
if you can maintain composure and dun really mind what other people are thinking about you, and can pop a fat boner for a chick at will, and maintain a good GPA on THC, go for it.
if you ever want to attempt life without THC, i suggest taking two 200mg caffeine pills to kill the depression (i still have not figured out how to live life without depression without caffeine).
the music thing... honestly, caffeine doesn't do that.

Paranoia is not a lack of ego, if anything it's an inflated one. Thinking that I am so important that everyone is spending their time worrying about what I'm doing.

o. yeah probably. either way i think that's not an uncommon problem for stoners.
my ego must be inflated to the point that i think everyone is conspiring to kill me all the time, but not inflated enough to the point where i believe all girls are masturbating for me constantly and want my penis inside of them. iono where i stand between those two points...
