Here's those two pins all grown up... I think H. capnoides is out, these gills are definitely on the orange side. I'm sporeprinting a smaller one, stipe is hollow and seems to have some amber colored granular stuff in it, but also a grub, so??? I suspect spores will be orange, I think I see some on the stipes. I'm dying to know what these are, they were so cute!

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

And doesn't help that my good cam is down, had to take those last 2 with the cellphone.
Just checked the sporeprint - a very pretty golden orange.

Looks like Gymnopilus sapineus to me. Bloodworm might have more to say when he sees it.

sapineus, penetrans, luteocarneus spores are all described as rusty brown or amber.

How did those more mature caps feel? They look a bit on the sticky side.

A little nibble should reveal an epic bitterness.

I brought this little branch home and put it in a 3/4 wine barrel, sprayed it down really good a few days ago and then we had some drizzle, so it's fairly wet. Not at all sticky. Today will be dry and sunny so perhaps they'll look a bit different dry.

Can't quite bring myself to that yet, not thru with the coffee phase.
I'm still seeing the print as a golden orange, not a rusty orange, but y'all can decide. These pics actually came out a bit better than I thought they would, color looks pretty true on my monitor.

Yeah, that's a nice bright orange print. Get a dry sample of those to Bloodworm.

While trying to find a good example of Gymnopilus sapineus prints I came across a post from Mr. Mushrooms a few years ago here on Shroomery. I assume he scoped them to species, but sadly we cannot ask him today...

That print looks pretty similar to yours. But was it really G. sapineus? All the guides I have access to list the print as rusty orange/brown. Something to ponder...

It's a good match for the pic/description at wiki and mycoweb:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnopilus_sapineus http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Gymnopilus_sapineus.html
but Kuo's pics/description are for a skinny stipe, these are rather robust.
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/gymnopilus_sapineus.html
I've dried the smaller specimen but am contemplating eating the other two larger caps before they are beyond salvage... We had our first light frost last night.
What's the worst that can happen? Given the bitterness how do you choke it down? Are 2 3" caps going to have any appreciable effect? Do you consume the stipe also?
Feeling adventurous today...
