This is a curious specimen that I first thought might be a gymnopilus, but I cant find any gymn that have the same color and density. Any ideas?
Habitat: Found growing in two dense clusers out of a crack in the middle of a hardwood stump. Suburbs north of Chicago.
Gills: pale brown/pinkish brown
Stem: Thick, solid stem about 2 inches, somewhat shaggy and rusty brown colored at the base.
Cap: Diameter (3 - 4inches), color (pale tan to beige), slight shagginess, flat and dense similar to an agaricus
Spore print color: brown to rusty brown
Bruising: none.
Other information: pleasant smell

first pics, brown sporeprint, agaricus. good luck trying to figure out which one.
though now that I take a second look, the gills aren't as crowded as I'd expect...
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

I can't wait to find P. distruens. I want to cultivate that species.

Yes, I believe this is it! Syn. Pholiota populnea. A very robust Pholiota looking similar to Agaricus growing on a stump.

For what purpose cultivation? I could find no quick confirmations on edibility. If you would like me to, I could send a spore print or ship the last specimen for trade.
Message me off thread...

I just found out they are now being called Hemipholiota populnea.
Cool.
Yeah I want to grow them and eat some. When I read conflicting info in many places about edibility I am inclined to think that the mushroom is actually edible.
Thanks!
