Mushrooms can recognize light so when do they grow?
    #19039453 - 10/27/13 05:56 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Iam not sure but mushrooms are photoactive.
So when are they growing? In the night or at the day or everytime?

Is your fruiting chamber most time dark or enlighten?

greetings?

They love light.
But it doesn't seem to change their growth speed.

They only need light to tell them which was it "up" - as they would know with the sun's light. Also they, like humans, have a circadian rhythm. 12/12 schedule of 6500K light and/or sunlight is ideal.

They love light, but it's gravity that lets them know which way is up.

Wrong....sry.

Gravity does that....they will grow straight up in complete darkness.

Light sometimes has been shown to help with the direction of the growth BUT what it really does is help the pins grow into a fully developed mushroom that is comparatively more dense than a mushroom that received no light. Also it helps a lot with establishing a nice pinset. Light, especially 6500K, is pretty much beneficial for all stages and for everything.

It is also generally agreed upon that mushrooms grow more at night, though i'm not sure how much study has been done on this? Point is, 12/12 works great.

Would it be recommandable to work with  a light in a 12/12 cycle?

Such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Feit-Electric-ESL40TN-Fluorescent-High-Wattage/dp/B001AZOV9K/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1382915425&sr=8-9&keywords=6500+k+lamp++grow ?

Because it has 6500K light temperature.

When the mushrooms are cultivated in an dark enviroment.

From my experiments so far,
Cubes do grow towards light.
There's no different between day and night growth rates.  Growth speed does vary depending on conditions and stage.
(The idea they grow more at night seems to be based on the 8 hour or so gap in viewing, plus their expansive growth rate before and during cap opening).

Example, this timelapse was held to a 12/12 light cycle over about 5 days.

Yes, mushrooms grow more during the dark cycle.  We've known that for many years.  They still benefit most from 12/12 because they use light as an energy source to convert sugars in the substrate into ATP within the cells.  Light is a pinning trigger also, but is equally important all the way to harvest.  In addition, brighter light in the neighborhood of 2,000 lux will produce more pins, and the mushrooms will have larger caps and higher finish weight than they will if insufficient lighting is used.

There's at least 4 night cycles in the gif, can you pick them out?
I would love to see the actual studies showing cubes gain energy from light.

There are threads that show the difference between light and no light mushrooms. As well as ones writing out the chemistry of how the light is given to the mushroom and converted during the dark cycle. I read on this a couple days ago but I'm not gonna go back through and search for um. Though the threads are here, for sure.

We are talking about growth during light cycle not light vs no-light.
I've grown no light on purpose to view the results myself... hence I recommend tons of light!
Again, scientific paper.  AFAIK a photosynthesis process has not been found in mushies and since RR quotes are God, here he agrees!
