Eastern North America Request - UPDATE with microscopy Eastern Baeocistis
    #19041448 - 10/27/13 03:49 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

UPDATE (original post below):

So I just unpacked a brand new microscope in order to get to the bottom of this ID. Unfortunately I have no experience with biology and microscopes, my background is physics and math in nature. But I'm ready and willing to give it a go.

Now I did not calibrate the oil immersion lense, so I don't have measurements for those, but I did measure the spores, They came out to be roughly: 5.5-6.5 micrometers, by 9-12 micrometers.

I mostly tried to find the Basidia and Cheilocystidia. Here are some shots.

Spores and measurements

Forked Cheilocystidia

Cheilocystidia

and now some Basidia shots

I do plan on measuring and making attempts to count the tips on the Basidia, but I do need more practice making sections and preparing slides. But all in all, not bad for playing around on my first day.

Let me know what you think, and any tips are appreciated (thinner sections... I know :P)

Please note I am mildly color blind, so colors may not be exact

Habitat:
Found a few of these growing in a  flower garden covered over with wood chips. Not sure on the type of wood, but seems mixed.

Gills:
Gills seem reddish/brown, seem to be attached.

Stem:
Length: about 4cm-6cm
Color : whitish-grey-tan

Cap:
Diameter: 2cm-4cm
Color: Dark green/brown
Cap has a separable pellicle, and is hygrophanus, turning a lighter tan color.

Spore print color:
In process.

Bruising:
Seems to bruise greenish, maybe bluish. Stem also gets really dark when squeezed.

Other information:
Smells mushroomy, here are some pictures.

Pulling off the pellicle (bad pictures)

the cap

It might be a psilocibian mushroom, but I`ve only even seen Semilanceata, Cubensis, ALT #7, so I have limited experience with psilocybes.

Anyways, good luck! I will update when spore print is available. Thanks

Definitely a Psilocybe species, but which one exactly, I'll leave that to someone more experienced with them.

Looks exactly like the P. baeocystis we find in the PNW.

Where are you located?  The only confirmed eastern find was in Maine as far as I know.

This is found all the way in Nova Scotia, around the 45th parallel.

That would make you the first person to find these in Eastern Canada if they are in fact baeos not quebecensis.  Congratulations!

They do seem to have a pleated cap, P. baeocystis seems very likely!

They are either P. baeocystis or P. quebecensis.  Microscopic study is needed.

Very likely the same as the warrioursoul / HerbBaker collection from a few years back.

I am not totally convinced that P. quebecensis gets a pleated cap like that....But maybe it does sometimes.

Nice finds dude, look like P. baeocystis to me.  Hope you get these to somebody with a scope for a solid ID, a very special collection without a doubt.

I vote for eastern baeocystis. Quebecensis supposedly has a hemispherical cap that's not pleated. Sweet find!

Another Awesome Scotian Find!
So will you be sending some out for scope work? I'd love to hear the definitive results!
