Possible Gyms at 8 feet

I was walking through the woods on a very dry day (no rain in two weeks), not expecting to find anything, when I noticed something orange growing up at about 8 feet in a tree.
They were these:

The caps are covered in orange spores, and it even stained my sweater. I tasted a little piece in my mouth, and it was very bitter.
Am I correct in assuming these are gyms or could it be another genus?

It could be Pholiota, the spore color is a bit off though.

No gyms don't grow 8 feet up in a living tree. They are Pholiota.

Which kind of Pholiota would it be? Notice there is a ring present in the last picture.
Later on in the walk I did come across some that I knew were Pholiota and they had the classic scales and did not have any spores coming off of the cap.

Is there any other information I could provide that would narrow down the identity?

Plentiful orange spores and a bitter taste sounds like Gymnopilus to me.

Yes. Many Pholiota are bitter. Try making a spore print on a white sheet of paper and post a pic of it when it's done. That should go a long way in narrowing it down. They don't look like any mushroom I know off hand but it's hard to tell how much the spore on the caps are effecting the color.

The spore print is more of a reddish brown than an orange now that I look at it again
Oh, and I just noticed a tiny bit of bluish staining near the stem

if you can get photos of fresh specimens, that would be awesome. keep an eye on the spot, they will fruit again... then, send them to me please...
with that being said, do not eat them.

Is it possible for these to be the lethal webcaps?
I didn't have any young specimens so I can't see if there are the webs present
Do the webcaps taste bitter or not?

Mushrooms in the genus Cortinarius (the web caps) are mycorrhizal (get their nutrients by partnering with plant roots, not by digesting wood). You will never find a Cortinarius growing eight feet up in a tree. That said, many Pholiota species are also not good to consume.

Which type of pholiota are dangerous to consume and match the images I have provided?
