It seems that this is possibly a hoax. Only Pitchfork and RS have reported it, and neither have sources.

The Chicago Tribune and Aljazeera are also reporting it, but again, with no sources.

They both have the RS article cited as their source. However the Guardian posted an article a few minutes ago saying his agent confirmed. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/27/lou-reed-velvet-underground-dies

It's a shame, he was a real influential artist. I suppose it's better that he at least died at 70 rather than in his 20s or 30s like some artists. Of course I am gonna put one some Lou Reed today to pay tribute.

Regarding the Velvet Underground influence John Cale had the much larger footprint. Reed was the face, Cale was the musician.

That is from Live MCMXCIII. This is the whole album
I think it is by far their best. They were at their peak as musicians and the live music is actually tighter and more coherent than the studio stuff from 25 or so years earlier. Give it a full listen. At one point Lou reveals himself to be a pompous twat when he introduces the band, I don't remember what song. With the sole exception of one side of Rock and Roll Animal I have always considered Cale's solo work to be far superior to Reed's and there was no reason for him to be so dismissive of Mo and Sterling.

Lou Reed was a horrid grumpy bastard of a man, no one should in any way conflate his personality with his talent. He was pompous as fuck, but he had many many moments of musical genius. He also had this, though, perhaps his worst song ever, I present to you, "Egg Cream":
Lou Reed - Egg Cream

Thanks for making this thread, man.
I grew up listening to the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed stuff. Just the other day my dad texted me to put on a live concert of "Berlin" that was aired; a commercially unsuccessful album that he never played live until this particular show, which was performed in the past few years. We've been chatting how weird it is he died since we reconnected with his music together.
One of my best friends was a big Lou Reed fan, and unfortunately he died about a year ago. It's still difficult to listen to a lot of the music since we shared a lot of it together. We were also getting high a lot so it has that connotation to it. Anyway, RIP Lou Reed.
You guys posted fuckin awesome songs in this thread! A proper send-off. You're all awesome.

Going back over his body of work I find that I like his live stuff way more than the studio. People have posted Perfect Day a few times but this version live is much better http://www.musicsense.org/album846485-Perfect-Night-Live-In-London.htm
Then, of course, there is side one of Rock and Roll Animal, which is perhaps my favorite 20 minutes of continuous music of all time. He wrote 'em but Steve Hunter owned 'em.

R.I.P. Lou Reed
The Velvet Underground's self titled album is so great. It's funny how bands even now try to emulate that sound. It's so raw/indie but at the same time pop that is layered in a dark atmosphere. One of those albums where if a song came on your shuffle you're not skipping it. Me and that album have a lot of history. Was so sad to hear Lou died today, like I don't even internet or something...

Man I love that album.
Was just reading Wikipedia's entry on Lou Reed
Great quote:
Quote:
The band's influence on rock, art rock and punk was memorably summed up by Brian Eno's observation that although the first Velvet Underground album may have sold only 30,000 copies in its first few years, "everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band".
