Chaga mushroom?

found this at about 8500 feet up in the mountains while looking for fly agarics. It looks to be a chaga mushroom, though I'm not sure. smells a little like licorice. I've looked at numerous other look alike species, and none seem to match. Did I actually luck out!?

Thanks for the pointless post.
The mushrooms in your gallery are a Phellinus species

Don't think it's a chaga, but some other shelf fungus. I bet River Dweller will know this one...
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

That first guys post is not typical for the MH&I forum. As Vjp suggested, it's a Phellinus species. Compare it to Phellinus igniarius.

Funny is pretty subjective. As is hostile I guess. Sorry to OP and anyone offended.

Thanks for being forgiving.
Dry sense of humor I guess doesn't come off so well in text when you don't include some sort of indicator you're joking...
Next time I'll be sure to include the obligatory
(that was a joke btw)

That's because it's not a mushroom. It's mostly made up of necrotic barrier tissues and hardened tree secretions. The real fungus is in the wood, it occasionally blows a chunk of bark off with a really cool organic piston mechanism to expose the spore surface. Vjp actually has one of the only good pics of the spore surface ever taken.

Fungi magazine's chaga issue has some photos that blow mine away. I need too take some new ones now that i have a macro lens. The fruit body is relatively common in our area.
